Actually i don't know about Canada, and i don't agree with it, but England/UK is most commonly described as the 51st state :)

or vaguely wrong, but this part is what i refer to;

It's just me, but perhaps instead of asking 'which state do you live in', you could just ask 'where are you from' :P Again, just an idea ^_^

England is a country.

And United Kingdom is formed out of:
England
Scotland
Wales
Northern Ireland
America

With America arguably being the weakest of the constituent parts :D
