Why are these unfortunate? the participants suffer from mysterious accidents and die after reading their masterpieces?

    Unfortunate at least in the sense that there will probably only be one winner each night, so the rest are unfortunate.  The other sense may be that one of your scholarly aptitude may consider puns, riddles, limricks, and the like to be "unfortunate" forms of "literature".
