BFH Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 Do you have a great idea to make MD grow? Share it with us! Many of my ideas are revolutionary and disliked by admins and even Mur. I see MD from the commercial side of view while admins see it from the "treasure" unique styled side of view. While I understand admins, certainly MD wont survive like that, neither those points pay server :P I'm searching for ideas that balances both areas, commercial part of MD while keeping MD style and awesomeness. I will reward stuff, probably coins from my inventory to those who post the best ideas. Everybody is open to suggest stuff and community is allowed to comment and discuss everything on this topic. rikstar Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 My idea was some time when I was thinking of this. Is to write things on social networks like reddit for example. Also try to contact reviewers so they are going to review MD or write an article about MD. Those two things will help MD, in my opinion. Quote

Maybe we can pay them? Chew can we pay them with MD stuff (creats, coins etc?)? Anybody interested? We had a reviewer here once, it didn't turn out so well. reviewers are bad atm! Because MD aint commercial and they wont understand 99% of MD in a few hours :P We can still use player reviews for the homepage, we have OOOOLLD reveiews there. Chew can we do that? Quote
rikstar Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 I guess the learningcurve. Or we as MD community write articles on sites. But nobody is gping to raed that. Or make posts about MD on similar games like MD about MD. Like dwarf fortress, I think some players of that game could appeal to MD. Quote

Articles on sites, good ones, help seo and by consequence helps md get more traffic and hence we get players. Articles are not a bad Idea. Chew can we pay (with md stuff) people for making good descriptive articles about us and for posting them on good websites? Quote
Menhir Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 I suggested a while back to use a MD Youtube Channel with many different things in it. Introduction of the game - some gameplay and of course the awesome art MD has to offer. Plus we could connect through this channel all possible important positions of the MD network (game/forum/FB other sozial media). One nice video series could be how our art is drawn by our artists. Make a video how you draw a new scene/item/Avatar - this alone is so interesting and would draw attention. We also could have an official "Talk" about the game and its development & why people play since years? Were is MD so different? and so on. We could make interviews with new and old players and put all this in a constant flow on the channel maybe once in a month. Dragual 1 Quote
rikstar Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 Menhir do you mean something like a weekly podcast I wpuld love to see that and ofcourse would love to help to produce. It could include talking about new features things that happen in MD and discussions and interviews. Quote
BFH Posted August 8, 2013 Author Report Posted August 8, 2013 We had a reviewer here once, it didn't turn out so well. http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/23/rise-and-shiny-recap-magicduel/ This is a real review that proves many of the commercial points I keep telling chew, mur, and admins about. We look like crap because we try to keep our style. I'm honest, they were honest. The cover doesn;t make the book, but certainly affects who buy it. At first I fell deeply in love with the game's guts. The developer (developers?) chose to keep the game as a text-based, semi-graphical world. I have always been a fan of MUDs but literally cannot play many of those that only concentrate on text. If I had to play a text-based game all day, my eyes would melt in a migraine breakdown. When I saw that MagicDuel featured a decent font on a light background and nice, hand-drawn artwork, I thought it would be the greatest game ever. Essentially you start in the "Paper Cabin," a strange little shack that is supposed to act as a newbie tutorial. While it does provide you with a pretty basic walkthrough and takes you through a story that is, well, amateur but fun, the problems come in immediately after you are asked to go out into the real world. Lots of text, empty cabin, horrid tutorial. We have great features, that aren't commercial and by consequence people see us as crap. I'm honest and with my feet on earth. That's why we need good ideas. I suggested a while back to use a MD Youtube Channel with many different things in it. It could include talking about new features things that happen in MD and discussions and interviews. I don´t know if we can handle a weekly one and if there would be enough to talk about but once in a month? I know how much time sozial media is cosuming I´m doing this since some months now with my own company and it´s hard to get something really working but on the long run I see not many other options to get people interested at all. This is a real review that proves many of the commercial points I keep telling chew, mur, and admins about. We look like crap because we try to keep our style. I'm honest, they were honest. Chew is the money guy!! =)) The Review is honest and shocking for someone who plays MD since some time. I have to admit that I had similar feelings for a long time when I started and there were many points were I started playing other games because of frustration and came back to MD after some time. MD is very slow and complicated because so far the community is MD and here are his most complains. I can understand this but have no idea how we could change our sometimes "elite" behavior. Quote

rikstar Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 A podcast with only talking in it is poaaible in a shorter timeframe, but more people are going to see it if its a video. Also putting tutorials on it is one good thing. So we can direct beginners to them with the most common questions answered there. Like creating rits, sacrifing and shared items explained. Quote
Rophs Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 (edited) People who like Dwarf Fortress would likely also enjoy MD. I'd gladly put a MD banner in my signature on the Bay12 Forums (where people discuss Dwarf Fortress and other games made by Toady One). Is there any specific banner I should use for that? Root Admin Chewett Posted August 8, 2013 Root Admin Report Posted August 8, 2013 http://magicduel.com/userfiles/181413/468x60_magic.jpg We should make an "advertise MD" page ingame, with all of the banners we have. Zyrxae and Rophs 2 Quote

Miq Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 We need a (new) extended tutorial. Before that i see no point advertising unless the current players ease up on the "learn it yourself" attitude. I know it part of the md way but it's getting to far. How about no secrets from mp3? I mean what huge things they really can ask for? Mallos, Dragual and Menhir 3 Quote
rikstar Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 yeah that is a way to make it much easier, when we give them information what is now called a spoiler. I am not sure if I am for or against it. Quote
Rophs Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 We'd need to figure out what is and isn't a spoiler. One touchy subject is the LR guards. Example of something that probably isn't a spoiler: They are nearly unbeatable for an mp3. Example of something that is a spoiler: [BLANK] is how you beat the loreroot guards Dragual 1 Quote
Syrian Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 whether you agree with spoilers or not, the reason i kept to this game wasnt because of the gameplay itself, it was the constant novelty of learning something, i always wanted to know something more, and i was told stuff, it kept me interested enough to make friends, and find my way, i know some people may disagree with this approach and may argue that it can lead to overloading people on info, but the point im trying to make is, not telling anyone anything at all will eventually take away from the experience, and could potentially make them think there is nothing deeper in the game. the things i was told at mp3 werent things that anyone would even consider to be too important, and tbh i dont even remember the majority of them, but it kept me here long enough to realise MD wasnt just the game i came here to play (and if the game is defined with its fighting i barely play this game at all anymore), MD about its secrets and the relationships you build (at least for me) but its possible people dont stay around enough to realise, or that they rely on the gameplay to be stimulating enough to stay around. i know a lot of things in MD act as a sort of filter, but maybe these filters are filtering too many people and turning too many people away because they dont/cant learn what MD is about. of course MD is different, but if they dont realise this, they will be dissapointed. knowledge is a big part of MD, but keeping even the small things from new players isnt helping them stay around, telling them to do everything themselves when they have no idea what to do will just make them frustrated and leave. of course most of this is from my personal experience as a new player, so what i say may not be entirely true for all the people that try and play MD,but maybe my thoughts will be appreciated by some. /Sy rikstar, Miq, Dragual and 1 other 4 Quote
Miq Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 Sy, How many of the likes of you (and i think most actives) do we get here in a day? Quote
Syrian Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 (edited) Sy, How many of the likes of you (and i think most actives) do we get here in a day? probably very few? though i have seen a few new people stay around and be active, maybe not every day, but often enough to be called active but maybe if more people felt like they were learning, we would have more? /Sy EDIT: to make what i said a bit more clear about what i meant Edited August 8, 2013 by Syrian Quote

I mean what huge things they really can ask for? Our Wookie and Murry have plans for that. I heard something about Omega... But why not going beyond them and share with us how you think tutorial should be done? We all know tutorial is wrong and not contributing atm of keeping players. Maybe your ideas and the community ones can supplement the ideas they have. That's why I ask people to share the ideas and how to accomplish them. Quote
No one Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 You should consider that for new players, it was designed the MP2. I don't remember the reasons for MP2 being taken out but you can reinstate it with forcing advancement after a while. Quote
Miq Posted August 8, 2013 Report Posted August 8, 2013 Somewhat offtopic: What are we? 25 players divided to 15 fractions? We can't even reliably keep the newbie areas at low visc.I long have lost any understanding on these one person wars. This all is so Estonian that it makes me laugh. Maybe we should remove some features, like all resources and cauldrons and leashes etc. DARK DEMON 1 Quote
