It seems that dominium is about being able to use it in any way you want, where dominion is the power of government.

Not true.
On second thought, there are definitely many cases where the hostility didn't build over time, they just happen to not be the ones that came to mind. Ivorak, darkraptor, shadowseeker off the top of my head.
I'll maintain, though, that this reaction from outside can make or break someone's ability to preserve innocence and keep acting "like a new player", though I'm still not sure exactly what that means.
