The Darkness Service, revisited

The priesthood informs me that a service will be performed with a new sermon on darkness. The service will take place on Day 59, Friday 1 March. Service times (Server Time):

08:00
15:00
22:00

The service will be more or less the same at each time period, and is being held thrice to suit the varying schedules of MD players globally. As before, this will be a red service at which combat is not only tolerated but encouraged, and will take place at the Maple Road just outside Loreroot. We hope to see you there.

Edit: Log(s) will be provided and posted for the benefit of those who cannot attend.

Me?
I'm not particularly against resource depletion. Personally I'd rather people not deplete it and leave enough for optimum regeneration because it will lead to more resources usable in the long run.

But when people deplete it, for various reasons (monopoly, prisoner's dilemma of trying to get as much as you can for yourself, RP reasons etc) I'm not going to curse them either.

While I love MD, I'm still sane enough to realize that it is, in the end, just a game and the lands are just pixels. They're not real lands and these are not real resources so I have no reason OOCly to say no to resource harvesting for the sake of "honoring the land" or something.

Amoran Kalamanira Kol reacted to Rumi in Resource Depletion: For or against?
@No one

Fire is an incredibly useful wholistic landscape management tool. However, the appropriate use of fire is not analagous to the resource depletion you promote in MD.

Thr use of fire in ecological management essentially promotes healthy new growth while eliminating dangerous, stagnant, or diseased older growth. An example is regular use of fire in a forest to eliminate the understory buildup of brush and limbs. This is called the fire ladder and presents a threat to the mature canopy when not regularly eliminated. The lack of natural or managed forest fires over 100 years in the American West is the reason our forest fires today are so devastating.

While the underuse of fire presents opportunities for the build-up of stagnant ecology, the overuse simply destroys that which you are trying to save. A first cannot survive a constant conflagration, which removes all moisture and eventually burns all living things to the ground.

Some further examples:

Pruning will extend the life of a tree or other plant by eliminating older and disease prone limbs. Proper pruning of a tree can extend the life by many years. Coppicing is an extreme form of pruning where you cut the tree back to the ground to allow complete regrowth. In Europe, coppicing of trees in hedgerows and around farm fields kept trees alive for centuries that would not have survived without being cut, all while proving farmers lumber and firewood.

Again, pruning and coppicing have their limits. The general rule in pruning is take no more than 1/3 of the top growth in any year. For plants that can coppice and regrow, you cannot cut them back to stumps every year or eventually the root system will die back just the same as the top growth.

In pasture or prairie management, growth is checked through the use of grazing animals. Managed rotational grazing of cattle herds mimics the natural herd migrations such as the wildebeest heed in Africa and the buffalo herds once found in North America. These animals move in established migration patterns which allow full growth of pasture grasses, followed by regulation of biomass through consumption. Fields where grazing herds are not present present fire a fire danger, and often lose mature ecological elements as other ecologies move into the space.

The overuse of cattle on a pasture, or overgrazing, which is very common on farms and ranches across the world occurs when their it's no migration pattern. Pasture animals easily destroy the field ecology, leaving a bare stubble of growth. Without strong root systems, compaction occurs under the weight of the animals and the soil structure is destroyed. Regeneration of these fields can take years in the best of conditions, and decades or centuries in areas prone to desertification.

So, back to you No one. The constant depletion of resources is in no way like the benefits of fire. Appropriate management would be allowing full regrowth after each depletion or daily "pruning" of resources from full down to the percentage that provides full regrowth each day. These are two ways that maximize harvest and mimic the general process of nature. Since the day the first herb basket was available, the Meeting of the Roads scene has not once, NOT ONCE, had 18/18 herbs. You and your companions have overgrazed it like a herd of stupid cows. You have yet to produce any decent milk or meat and instead you have provided this load of infertile bull****

Greetings, one and all. I return from a long period of inactivity, but others have carried the flame in my absence. I now wish to muster those who still call themselves Children of the Eclipse.

This is the roster of current, active members, to the best of my knowledge:

Mystic

Phantom Orchid

Esmaralda

Tarquinus

Darry Dabby

Aranna

Marvolo*

*affiliation uncertain
**possibly semi-active

If you consider yourself a member of the Eclipse and do not see your name on this roster, contact me via PM.

Darkness Gathers
In the past we have held ceremonies honoring the goddess of the Moon. While we intend to continue honoring the Great Goddess, tripartite goddess, and so on, the priesthood tells me we must summon the darkness within ourselves - the worst thoughts, feelings, and memories. Nothing will be done except by the bloodiest blows. In recognition of this fact, we will hold a ceremony (also called a "Red" service) at Maple Road, 06:00 Day 34 server time. All are welcome to come, fight, bleed, and share in the offering of our pain to the hopeful light in the darkness.

There may be other convocations or "services" at later dates to be determined.

I did this "mass message" to get a fix on the opinion of people in the realm, and to let the community know that we aren't dead yet. I'm grateful to the individuals who gave me their thoughts, and I'm happy to say that I agree with them.

The Children of the Eclipse should be earned, not granted in a wish. I highly appreciate Dark Demon's effort, but as I stated in the voting thread, it was merely an option that I did not want to ignore.

Instead of using it to rack in votes, I would prefer to use the feed back from those messages to move in the right direction. Thank you to everyone who chose to tell me your thoughts.

it is noble that you wish to do this but...

if you have no intent on joining the alliance then why would it be returned to efforts you bring to it.
i am not shooting down what you wish to do. I just curious as to why it would be returned to one whom
states they have no wish to be part of it.

For me and what i see. and yes i am still about to see things and please take no offence
but forms is not the place to work on regaining an alliance it need to be an in game thing.
moaning or complaining about unfairness on the forums is not the way to about regaining
the alliance. has anyone tried to get an audience with the Demon god? to see if he will help

Or even make a proper dedicated ritual (over a long time i mean more then 48 hours)
have those that where/are of the alliance carry the badge in another way?
what of the stories of the alliance? have they been told in game?
There is so much more that can be done with the tools of what is in MD
and yet they are unused.

Come on guy if it is really that important to you
then do something about it and i mean something good and proper
hell you might even try wining (IN GAME) people of influence to your
side and gain support. It is within the power of the community
to aid you but only if you do it right.

Wars/Tournaments.

Everything would be based on a new thing called "Land Influence" or LI.

Keep wars (tournaments) of 6 lands (namely Marinds Bell, Loreroot, Golemus Golemicarum, Necrovion, MDA, and East) every 3 months a year, kinda like the heads contest but on a massive scale. A land would get LI for winning these wars. 3 of the strongest fighters from a land would participate. Winning a battle against an opponent would not only increase LI of the respective land but also increase land loyalty (i.e. landscore which reduced AP cost when travelling through a land) by 25 or something like that (can be decided on later).

LI would determine the strength of a land. At the end of the tournament, a win/loss ratio would be used for this. Total LI throughout the realm would be 100%. The land that wins the tournament would have the highest share of that, lets assume it turns out to be 40%. This would mean that the rest of the lands together would have 60% LI, but obviously less each individually. (for example: Necrovion has 40% in this case. Loreroot would have, say 13%, GG would have 9%, MDA might have 13%, East might have 17% and MB might have 8%. All make up 100% together)

The land with the highest LI in the realm would gain a certain stat bonus for all its members. Second would get half of that, and so forth.

I dunno, just something to encourage activity, teamwork and most of all, competition. Also, I've heard some people say that these days the purpose of lands and alliances has completely degraded and they are nothing more than methods to make walking through the land easier. I want to change that, and I believe this will do that trick.

What will this do?

1) It will create that "spirit" of teamwork. You'll see people of the same land in groups, learning and training hard together to win the next tournament.
2) Competition between lands. The "bragging rights" if you know what I mean
3) Something to attract new players.
4) Competition not only on the global level, but within lands too (to become one of the 3 fighters chosen)
5).......

I'll even state the flaws of this myself if people want to discuss them:

1) If a land is too strong, such that there is no competition against it, what then?

2) Would this actually increase a person's loyalty towards his/her land, or decrease it by causing them to switch sides?

3) Such a large update of introducing LI and also organizing such tournaments will take along time to code and be implemented. Why do this when there are still bugs and other problems? (My answer to this would be that it will attract lots of players and increase activity. And I believe that more players and more fun is more important than some bugs which can be tolerated meanwhile.)

EDIT:

I thought about the battle system... as far as I think, there would be 3 fighters from each land and 6 lands in total. 2 lands would face each other at a time (obviously) and that would be one round, which means that 3 rounds would take place simultaneously. It would be best if one of the 3 fighters from each land are MP4. Lands have a choice to send whichever player they like (out of the 3 chosen at the start) to fight their opponents. A win would score a point, but no negative points for losing. One by one, all lands would face each other (this will take 4 days if there are 3 rounds per day simultaneously like explained above). To give fighters time to regenerate vitality/talk, the fights in a round can be kept at different times of the day. After the 4 days of contesting, LI will be changed respectively according to who won the wars. This would also mean that it wouldn't matter how badly you got beaten. In a war, the side which wins 2/3 fights would be the winner. If two or more lands win equal number of wars, then yes, the "how badly you lost" part can come into play.
After reading over, I think 4 lands would work, not 6...

...and twice a year would be best

Amoran Kalamanira Kol reacted to DARK DEMON in Why I want to revive CoE
Since before the personal request month started, I was noticing fellow Lorerootians awaiting the return of the Eclipse. It had appeared they lost all hope. Some of them were awake at times, some logging in just for active days, and some not awake at all.

I had nothing to do with CoE --> I never thought of joining any other than the Guardians of the Root. Nor will I join CoE if and when it returns.

So yeah, why I worked for it?

Firstly, this would prove that my land people can trust me; that I'll always be loyal to Loreroot. I wanted them to acknowledge that there is now another who is one with the forest, permanently. This is a service to my land and it's people. As a service to my fellow Lorerootians, I wanted to make sure they weren't forgotten; that the tiny hope in their hearts that CoE would return was still there and could grow bigger.

Secondly, I believed that Amoran and Tarq had not finished their part in this realm, even though they were no longer seen at the time. When dst told me they had left because of her, I swore I'd make sure they returned. Not only because I deeply respect them, but that I never had a chance to really interact with them. I wanted them to be more active. I heard so much about them before and, out of all people, they shouldn't have had their alliance taken for a ridiculous reason. The activity of the realm keeps shifting, you can't really expect someone to stay active all year round. I'm also quite sure that 95%+ people in the realm wanted to see them back.

Third, I wanted to restore the same Lorerootian spirit at the time of Firs, and is now no longer there. It would be incomplete without the appearance of the people of one of Loreroot's alliances. Their return would give people a spark of hope. I didn't want them to hold their head over the "good ol' days". Instead, make the future the way you want it to be, if not better. There is still a chance...

Last comes the selfish part.

I've always wanted to be unique; to do something even the greatest people failed to do. If I could succeed in reviving CoE, that dream of mine would come true. It's a matter of pride to restore what the forest had lost.

So many of you support CoE, that I have seen. And hence, I have one small request for all:

PLEASE, do not think negatively of the forest. There are people who do, and I just can't bear it when I see it. The forest is a wonderful place, and I'm even willing to sacrifice myself on behalf of it. Shem, Mya, Tarq, Amoran, Poe... they are all such amazing people. Will you really get swayed by those who try to put up flame topics against them and their land?

To me, the whole idea of the personal request month was to make a request that was selfish enough that the council would grant it, and popular enough that others would like you to get it, over other people's wishes.

Interesting but I see it differently.
This all "selfish request" was a "charade" to give the common fool (read player) and that means YOU (yea, you, the one that reads this) , the feel of the choices Council does everyday.
Just read all the "selfish" requests and make a list of what you would not want to see implemented that are really inappropriate.
Now, consider that these requests would have been made to council directly and you should understand the "feelings" of some for the Council because they feel "neglected" and you might even understand what I feel for those that go with their requests directly to Mur as Council doesn't acknowledge their "great/unique" idea.

Points have been made already, we know their purpose, and Piss Piss is secretly laughing in the dark corners of Romania as we speak, only one thing left to do before you close this thread; and that is to recognize Dark Demon for all his efforts because let's face it, if it wasn't for him, Amoran and the others who are actually part of the alliance will remain handicapped, right? Someone please recognize the recognition-hungry people.

Until then, everybody will be satisfied, so it would make so much sense for this to be closed afterwards.

You know something? Flame topics, like these, are why I hardly ever take the time to read anything on the forums. In my opinion, if someone has a problem with something someone else is doing, they should first speak to that person in private before bringing it up in a forum topic. Then, if that conversation does not do anything, speak to other players in private and get their opinions on the issue. If enough players agree with you and feel it is a problem, then you should proceed to open up a topic like this. Otherwise, please keep it off the forums. The only thing you people are doing, are making the forums worse for those of us that want to actually enjoy our time, not only in game, but also while on the forums.

You want to deserve to have the alliance back, and you will in time. But other people that consider themselves Children of the Eclipse should do whatever they can to deserve it back as well.
And discouraging them because you can't give it 100% isn't working for the alliance.
Seems it took a fresh blood to gather them together and start acting as a team, for me it's a good start, don't push it away because it's not your initiative.

@Samon - I keep saying the CoE should prove its worth because I mean it. I repeat: I am grateful to Dark Demon for his kind thought. But I know how the CoE started in the first place.

I move too slowly for most, or have done in the past year or so. That is what it is. I will not apologize for the circumstances of my life. I do, however, feel the need at this time to contribute something to MD - something interesting, something fun, and hopefully something instructive about the game itself. Too often I have defaulted to tournaments and worship ceremonies that seem pointless to some. I would like there to be a point, and I would like it to be self-evident. That's easier said than done. All I can say is that I have begun making plans. I will need allies, by which I mean other players who are also interested in fun (and it doesn't necessarily matter whether they like the CoE), because the best and most interesting things I have encountered in MD have always involved multiple players doing something competitive and cooperative, where there is the promise of a well-earned reward and the risk of loss or failure.

So I am researching and thinking of quest ideas. Certain players knowledgeable about game mechanics will be hearing from me, because my coding skills are mediocre at best. If people are interested in the CoE, I will find them. I know we have enemies, and actually I am proud of that; how boring would it be if we did not, and this was all a big, happy lovefest? If the Council grants Dark Demon's wish and restores our badge on that basis, I will be extremely grateful, but it isn't my plan. I mean to rebuild the CoE the way I started it: one person at a time.

'Campaigning' for a vote that your leader didnt mention in his top ten votes? Lol. I dont even know what to say.

Edit: Wait! I think i do know what to say.
Doesn't really help your cause if your leader does exactly opposite to what you are campaigning for

Asking noobs to support your cause because you're too lazy to WORK?
Poor taste - on your part, yes
Cheating - If campaigning for a wish is cheating, isn't your campaigning against a wish cheating?
Crude laziness - Since the message was sent in game, it seems that Amoran WORKED by walking around and sending messages to your so-called "noobs" rather than your being lazy by posting one message on the forum so that many could see it.

dst, every time you start one of your self righteous witch hunts I get more tired of this game and that is one of the problems that MD is currently experiencing. Will you be happy when everyone leaves and you are left alone in the world?
