1.
I am unsure how the logistics will work out, but i may require your assistance in the future...I am the captain of the Crimson Blade, and i hope someday to find an offshore island, or continent that we may expand to...Should i ever find such lands, your assistance could be most benificial, and appreciate. I was merely wondering if i would have your assitance in such a case?
Absolutely.
2. I like the idea. I try not to do all armed warriors, but having a method of categorization makes sense. I guess that means we're breaking up the monster thread. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.
3. The Land weapons are not the property of ANY guild. They are the weapons of the lands. While it may be a spoiler, it's really more of a tantalizer. MRD has told us nothing other than that the defense weapon is activated from a place almost no one can get to and it's controlled from a place everybody already knows is a control station.
4. That's why the dojo is getting an in game location that will have rules in place in the programming. see the following topic. http://magicduel.invisionzone.com//index.php?showtopic=2258
5. Okay, the next step in Dojo Evolution - It now has a background! Comments?
6. Here's a few of my latest ones. The ones BlackThorn posted and these plus many many more (between 50 and 60) should be turned in to Mur this weekend.
7. I like those Yami. Nice work. Get yourself a scanner and I could probably put you to work.
8.
What do you mean by building? I'm not sure about any ideas for any of the places currently in MD, but if you could open up a new area in the north-west past Loreroot. Mountain holds, citadels, underground cities in complex cavern systems. An altar suspended above a gaping abyss in the heart of a mountain. Dragon cities upon lofty peaks in the far north. Abandoned ruins of an old civilization before Daniel Raven, and Jack Willow. Signs of Elf dwellings. The remnants of a race of dwarves in small villages niched into the mountains nearby their mines. A vast maze of passes, small glens and mountain vales. I can not compare in artistic skills to any of the artists on the game, but if I get better I'll contribute as much as I can. And I would really love to base an alliance of assasins known as the Anmaglahk in the northwestern corner of the mountains in the homeland of the elves, backed by a sheer drop down the cliffs of Insanity into the pounding surf. Of course they would have to befriend the elves and swear fealty or something first. I'll need to do more planning on this and probably learn some coding. It's some awesome ideas I have but I'm not sure how feasible they are. But I am seriously going to make an effort to accomplish it.
That's a fascinating idea. It would require a lot of work and Mur would need to buy in, but it's not out of the question. Let's talk some more about it. I happen to know a few artists that might be able to pull something like that off. It would take a long time though
9. I'd be glad to provide any help I can. If they're really at the house of tainted times, then getting to them could prove to be quite challenging. I don't know that there is a way in. Is there anyone that can freely enter at this point?
10.
You sound kind of.. offset.. you sure it's not because my glorific painting glorifically (I know it's wrong, shush) glorified the current situation?
Actually, the way it's written is Glor-ific. It means something as awesome as me, especially when pertaining to artwork. In this case, I think you used it appropriately.
11. Please move this topic to the University - School of Arts. Thanks.
12.
I use tracing to work fast but correct. It's just being lazy Just the outlines, so that I have a basic form to start from. "fast" is still 2 hours or more for an avatar. It also keeps the drawing rather fresh, without helplines. I made a lightbox , a rectangular wooden box with a lightbulb inside, one side of the box is plexiglass. if you make one, don't let the lightbulb touch the wood!, it gets very hot. I then place a printout from a composition i made in photoshop on the lightbox , and over that a sheet of paper to draw on. Tracing is not as easy as it sounds, it's very difficult to keep the drawing spontanious, usually you can see right away when someone used this method. Vermeer and other famous painters used a camera obscura to trace. Michelangelo punctured little wholes in his drawings to tranfer them on the ceiling of the chapel. Try to use as little lines as possible, or even just some points. keep them very light so they don't show in the finished work. This depends on the way you like to work of course, there is a beauty and feeling in spontanious sketches you can't get this way. But if you want a more photorealistic effect this is a good way. both ways are very different from each other. A sketch is more like the MD drawings, rather loose lines, and visible pencil strokes. Of course, if you really want to learn how to draw, you should draw from life as often as you can.
I really couldn't have said it any better. Morrel seems to have had some formal training. One tip on a light box... it's a little more expensive, but if you use flourescent lights instead of an incandescent bulb it won't get nearly so hot. Not only does that decrease the risk of setting your box on fire, but it's easier to work with because the heat of the bulb rising up won't make you feel all hot & sweaty! I trace my scenes a lot and do a lot of overlay drawing. Someone remind me and I'll post some of that work. I'm not at home right now so i don't have that stuff to post. It provides a much cleaner drawing and especially helps with perspective if you either model the scene in a modeling program or if you lay out your perspective and rough out the drawing beforehand and then trace over it to get a more finished looking scene. If I can find some of it I'll scan in some of my work from school and you'll see some of the difference.
Here are some more realistic ones... (using tracing to get accurate measurements, contour, height, width, key points..) This one took about 50 hours.. As you can see on this close up, the detail isn't really that high... It's putting lots of layers of shading that took most of the time. first layers with a hard pencil (light in color) then softer and more black pencils. So instead of putting more or less pressure on my pencil, I just use different hardnes of pencil to get tone.
I use a mechanical pencil for the most part. You can get the different leads in packages so you can change them out or have multiple pencil tubes to fill with different leads. Mostly I use a HB, which is pretty much your standard hardness for most pencils, but you can get a whole range. Here's the scale 9H 8H 7H 6H 5H 4H 3H 2H H F HB B 2B 3B 4B 5B 6B 7B 8B 9B Hardest → Medium → Softest You can also buy standard wood pencils if you don't want your lineweight so controlled. Mechanical Pencils typically range in diameter from .3mm to .9mm, but a wood pencil wears down and the weight changes as it does. If I want a pencil that changes weight I typically use a woodless pencil. It's a stick of graphite wrapped in a plastic sheath to keep your hand clean and for labelling. They don't break as easily as the lead (actually graphite, but lead is the common name) in a wood pencil.
13.
warriors shield looks just like spartan shield so it isnt so original
Actually, that's exactly what it is. I didn't make this one up. I'm also not real happy with the one of the guy holding a head, but I worked on it long enough that I just decided to be done and not overwork it.
14. Some of my latest. a new one for Renavoid some others that will be up for grabs. comments?
15. This stuff should be posted in the main Artisans Guild Topic. Please close this topic.
16. So, where and what should it be? Also, if you want it to be a separate building, where in the MDA Lands should it be placed?
17. Well, it seems Mur has said it will be in the MDA Lands, so I'm changing the poll. Now I'm asking if it should be in the Archive building as a room, or be a whole building unto itself.
18.
Wasp's Altar, the only altar that is not associated with the name fenth.
The sacrifice altar in Necrovion is called the Eternal Toiler, but the rest have the word Fenth in them somewhere. Is it possible that there is a connection between the two? Also of note is that the tower of Deathmarrow (at least from what I can tell from the map) has a similar, although far more massive, appearance to wasp's totem.
It might be possible that the altar is the power source required to activate the Totem.
It might be worth buying up a bunch of low level creatures and sacrificing them at the altar and see if we can get the totem powered. Perhaps a large group of people assembled there saccing creatures would be enough to wake it up, like when everyone released heat to the angiens. Any ideas on what creatures would work best?
19. Personally I like the idea of an auction or a lottery. I think maybe the level 2 avatars should be the ones auctioned though and the level 1 avatars should still be first come first served. Either that, or there should be a shop item that allows people who buy it to get into the avatar part of the shop a day before everyone else. Ideally I think there should be some manner of custom avatar system put in place, but at this point I think Manu's got a lot on his plate and this may not be a priority for him.
20.
Maybe It's to prived, but how old are you guys? You draw all so... so very nice, I can almost not imagen you're my age. Just want to know!
Hmmm... lets put it this way. I started taking drawing lessons when I was very young and I've been drawing for 23 years, so that should give you an idea without me actually stating my age.
21. Here's a place to give Mur his public feedback about an Avatar Auction. Personally I like the idea. It gives people a better shot at getting their custom avatars, but it also makes it more difficult for some people to get an avatar. What do you all think? Please vote in the poll and if you have something to add to the discussion, please post below.
22.
... Why can't you at least show some in the forum? I want bunnniiieeess :D:D:D:D:D Puh-lease? Note to self, should really scrutinize the entire forum better and more often..
If it's alright with Mur, I'll post my drawings for the rabbits here.
23. When I brought the in-game subject up I was thinking it would be an in game extension of some of the school of thought exercises and other philosophical lessons, completely separate from the dojo. The dojo may also have some philosophical lessons, but for the most part, its role is to teach combat and balance. The university should be much more than that. It may have some lessons on game principles, but I've found these school of thought subjects very interesting and I was thinking it would cool to have a place in the game where this could be more immediate and interactive. Are you sure MDA is the best place for it? The Sages' Keep seems like it would be ideal. If it were in the MDA Lands, it should probably have its own building, don't you think? The archives seem like an ill-suited place for such an endeavor.
24.
Nope, not at all! On the other hand, it is not a science. Most of the "rules" of drawing do not apply when you get down to it and start drawing, however they are not to be ignored, the rules ARE important. But not to work as they dictate, but to notice in which way they are wrong. No one has ideal proportions. They are ideal, not realistic. It is up to the artist to decipher in which way a person defies the rules. Is he long-limbed, short, tall or portly. A would-be draftsman needs to think about many things while he's drawing; proportion, format, color value, perspective, shape of the underlying object (plastic anatomy), angles, light sources (shadows), and sex (necessary byproduct of being a man, we cant turn it off ). Not many of these things are scientific. You use your gut feeling for the most part, but the gut feeling is only good when it is confronted with a specific problem. Drawing well is a test of concentration and intelligence and most of all constant practice! When you think you got it all mastered and stop thinking about one(or more) of those things, you duck up and there's something missing in the picture. It is hard to completely concentrate on a task, especially one that takes as long as drawing. The brain gets tired and you make mistakes. The only thing you can do is improve its endurance by PRACTICE But if you are a casual draftsman and you want to relax by drawing, like I do with my fantasy work, stop worrying and let your mind flow.... let your hand, not your mind do the work and enjoy the messed up forms you make
Dikra's right. The rules are really only guidelines to help you out. I should probably point out that I drew those figures first, then drew the lines in to illustrate the proportions. The rules are for checking your work and as a kind of guide you should have in your head when you begin working.
25. Yeah, anime and manga still follow a lot of the same proportional rules, but they play it a bit more fast and loose. That said, this info will only help you so far as you practice with it, and also, sketching people out in the world, even though it might make them uncomfortable if they notice you, is a good way to learn. It's especially a good way to see how clothing falls on people, which can be a real pain to try to get right. Anyway, here are a few of my figure studies. I'll flesh them out to show more how that works, but here's several images for you to look at. Does all of that make sense?
