On Day 185, Year 7, Phantom Orchid and Rumi planted pumpkins in the pumpkin patch in the community garden.

Those of you who have followed the Community Garden Design thread will know that the pumpkin patch is a part of the garden most associated with Necrovion.

The contest has three parts and a bonus part (not required for completion - but it will help you win). The entry for each part MUST be posted in the appropriate section of the community garden forum. I apologize for the confusion this will surely cause. PM entries to me as well so I can look over them as a group.

1) Draw one or more scarecrows for the pumpkin patch.

PART 1 ENTRIES MUST BE POSTED IN THE COMMUNITY GARDEN ARTWORK THREAD
http://magicduel.inv...garden-artwork/

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2) Submit a list of steps required to construct the scarecrows (and maybe bring them to life? ) Include a list of resources and items needed. Do not hesitate to be creative if a resource or item you have in mind has not yet been seen in the realm. And don't forget the bones!
PART 2 ENTRIES MUST BE POSTED IN THE COMMUNITY GARDEN DESIGN THREAD
http://magicduel.inv...-garden-design/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3) Submit an essay about pumpkins and why they would relate to Necrovion.

PART 3 ENTRIES MUST BE POSTED IN THE COMMUNITY GARDEN RESEARCH THREAD
http://magicduel.inv...arden-research/

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BONUS: The pumpkin patch will be companion planted with corn and pole beans. Suggest some other companion plants for a pumpkin patch and explain why they make a suitable plant guild.
BONUS ENTRIES MUST BE POSTED IN THE COMMUNITY GARDEN PLANT LIST THREAD
http://magicduel.inv...den-plant-list/
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The best entry will win a wishpoint if it shows merit enough to deserve one. Otherwise, awards will be distributed from the Community Garden treasury. More information on judging and prizes will be posted soon.

UPDATE: Joshdragon is directly sponsoring the contest with an imperial aramor and a joker. These will be awarded along with other prizes.

How about a button to activate all the vote links, for the people who want all at once? Hitting each of the buttons seperately, and always waiting for the refresh, takes lots of time and nerves, which i'd rather waste in chat than on the free creds page

Kharma. That's what it does to people who kill the innocent wookies of MD.

Also, despite the importance of Kharma, not really an important discussion issue of no man's land. Moved to offtopic, lest somebody knows a better place.
I'll suggest a coffin section for the dead and their problems, i think

I'm only asking because it's not right to only have a vote with one option.

It's not an accurate indicator of the community's feelings on the subject.
If the community doesnt care enough to make one, then clearly they dont care about them not getting it back. If you feel strongly take some action.

Going back to my original question, and reason this topic started;

Define a reasonable price for revival.
Here's another approach: your compensation for using your tool, for which you worked hard, freely on others, is the ability to revive anyone, gratefulness of players, and why not ability to befriend anyone, including enemies (or you could make them grovel before you ), etc. Isn't that worth more than 20 bloody coins, or any "price"? The most valuable things in MD are not material … I think.

The 'uniqueness' of revival items should be taken into consideration when talking about Revival Fruit.

Even though I may disagree with how they are used (or not) presently, those items are special and meaningful for the persons holding them, and I acknowledge that.

But given that death can overtake and overwhelm a player's spirit, and they have no recourse unless it is part of a roleplay where some problem-solving must occur, or they have enough coin, I think that if enough players desire to put forth the effort (which, I would assume means there is enough of a consensus that it is deemed 'a good cause'), they should be returned to life.

This would also, I imagine, free up Council time from having to consider whether or not reviving someone is justified, in their eyes. Unless, of course, the stench of rotten wookie becomes too unbearable...

Having a mechanism that allows for a communal revival should take substantial effort (and I mean a *lot* of effort - it should be difficult to accomplish and require much cooperation). Death is highly symbolic and important, and it should maintain such a status.

Also, one limitation could be that revivals may only happen during certain times, perhaps on so-called Days of Tranquility.

Well, my full thoughts on the matter are a bit complicated.

While I see the overall importance of Patience and the need for personal accountability towards Action for our characters, there is a line somewhere between the "game" and the Game of MagicDuel. Death is an interesting experience, if handled properly. The limitations can be either torturous for someone dedicated to creature combats, or wonderful for those into the RP and symbolic side of things. Death, overall, is a good thing to have, as ther is always hope for it's reversal. Nothing ever dies in MD has been said before, in relation to accounts leaving, and such.

In this regard, charging for a revival is also a good thing. We are free to set our own selves up as anything we want here. Greedy, evil, good, generous. It all can exist in the shared wonderful Realm we inhabit here. There is always potential challenges for our characters, that if soemthnig doesnt' work, try something else. If it's important to you, and you put forth an effort, there's a nice chance Things Happen.

However, the important part of this is the hope and potential for the future. Failure in MD can teach us about our own responses to similar situations in Life. But those lessons need to be constructive, rather than rejections.

I really really hate to use Spartiatis as a martyr, but his situation is a perfect example in my mind where the meta-line of "MD spirit" can potentially get crossed. The player was effected deeply, and by my reading had posted "I'm done".
Some could say the character did not put forth enough effort towards his Goal (revival), and those are valid thoughts, in most cases. Yet not everyone here Roleplays, or is a socialite.
Some could say that it's just another case of the person not "getting" the realm's identity, and not quite fitting in. I can't accept that opinion though, because there is no "not fitting in" here. There 's a place for all types of characters, silent grinders, or pure Roleplayed Beings.
I'm sure there are peopel who come to MD as curious newbies, and leave after a while, finding the game not to their liking. That's fine.

But when someone enjoys the game, has integrated themselves into the community, then loses Hope that they will ever get to play again.. that's bad.
That reflects directly on MagicDuel itself, counter to the Advertiser's efforts. Pushing a player away, is generally a bad thing, once it becomes clear that the Character's irritation of "being dead" has crossed over to player frustration at being excluded entirely from what keeps him/her here to begin with.

Would the spirit of MD be harmed deeply if in such cases the admins or Council steps in to "cheat" a bit and revive someone in this sort of situation?

Ideally, I'd hope that the player would at least be reminded "sorry its taking so long, try something else." or "Rest assured that in ## time, you could be revived again, but not at the moment". A little glimmer of Potential is a Big Deal at times.

So in summary, the value of a Revival in MD is quite variable, depending on the situation.
The value of a Life in MD is priceless though. If we kill a spirit, that is not worth the cost at all.

- Rewards: creatures (tormented souls), enchanted stones (summoned army and mirror ritual).
(additional rewards will be considered if your submission deserves it).
- Requirement: this quest is intended mostly for MP4, but it's open to everybody.
- How to start: Contact me (in-game PM or forum PM).

Following this trail will require Time and a sharp gaze, but will grant you a better understanding of the concept of mirror in MD.
You'll also gather experience on fighting, creatures abilities, and all those details one cannot ignore when dealing with mirrors.
Completing the quest will grant you a deep knowledge of the mechanics beyond mirror ritual spell (as far as I know, the only way to be 100% sure to win a fight, no matter the opponent).

Notes:
- The quest is divided into 4 parts;
- Each part will be presented singly, when the previous one is completed;
- Each satisfactory submission will be rewarded with creatures and/or enchanted stones;
- Part 2 and 3 will be reviewed together with 2 judges, who will decide whether to sponsor an additional reward;
- There's no deadline.

Grido you're going to have to accept that you aren't going to make a profit off an item like that.

Eon paid his premium to HAVE the item, not expecting to get a profit. Imagine buying a luxury car or piece of jewelry.... it doesn't earn you anything... it's marginally useful, but certainly not profitable.

In short, you've used the revital item as a status symbol, not as an actual tool that should be used. What good is it doing you?

1. Is the a prevention to corruption? What stops the the Leadership from thinking "actually, we can make a few cents off this..." other than good intentions, of course.

2. See above.

3. I do not consider that a great deal of effort, unless you are thinking of large numbers involved.

What value is a life(in MD)? As demonstrated by his creatures being sold, 20gc was easily attainable for Spar he didn't want to spend it though (for fairly valid reasons not associated with the price)
That's a fairly bad analogy , since I'm not hiding away or unwilling to use my item, just apparently people consider it too pricey.
How about you define a reasonable price? Baring in mind that Eon paid 50gc for his, so a reasonable price would not be 5sc or such, as that would equate to 150 uses before he started making profit off it. Feel free to message me (anyone) regarding that, rather than derail the topic here. I should note I won't necessarily adopt said prices, but I'd be interested in what the general opinion is.

Also, I might be forgetful on this, but pretty sure nobody has actually tried to barter with me (my bad if they have), they've pretty much heard me say 20gc and then they turn around, lol. Not saying it would have worked, but for no attempt?

Thanks for your questions Grido... if anyone else wants to chime in, feel free.

1. We do intend to arrange distribution to be through the Community Garden Leadership. If revive fruit were to be a scene generated resource, the collection would require a tool available in the garden toolshed (ie: used by the leadership). Until the toolshed is coded to serve as an shared item distribution, my inclination is to see the harvest directly distributed within the leadership. If I were to name an individual, it would be Phantom Orchid, who is willing to sacrifice her personal item so that the community can have a revive item available.

2. I agree with you on the problem of Fyrd going inactive. He has offered to give ITC codes as a backup in case he disappears, although I still view this as a bottleneck. Perhaps a pickling jar (cauldron) would be a shared item, returned weekly to the garden toolshed. Fyrd has specifically stated his intention to have a revive item in the form of his drum. We'd like to see some way this can be incorporated into the community garden revival fruit project. I'm certainly open to suggestions of other ways this could work. As I mentioned, I feel the nature of a drum lends itself to heat gathering, and the process could possibly require any heat gathering personal item, rather than just Fyrd's drum.

3. The effort on the part of the community is the gathering of resources and heat. This is not so different from the revival methods used up to now. However, this would give us a reliable process to do it, rather than hoping that someone somewhere is listening.

Again, these ideas are a framework, not a final construct. I would like to hear recommendations which further community involvement, yet remain accessible so long as a number of community members are willing to put in the effort.

I cannot help but point out that it is you and Eon and other toolholders who have made your tools worthless. Like a carpenter whose tools gather dust in the toolshed, because he already has a house. His tools have become worthless when another carpenter constructs houses for the other townspeople and takes all the business.

You were all given tools so that the community had the power to revive itself, yet you have not made them available. Had you set a reasonable price, it would likely have been paid and your tools would have value. You could, as suggested, earn a regular income through murder. Instead, the public now demands their own tools, and we intend to grow them.

(This thread is meant to work in conjunction with a few other active threads. Links will be added as new threads open.)

http://magicduel.invisionzone.com/topic/12519-the-value-of-life-in-md/

Throughout the past year, we've seen a tremendous increase in fatalities of players in MagicDuel. Each of these murders has resulted in a flurry of community action, and all have eventually led to the revival of the dead. We've shown that the community can come together and express a collective action, gathering massive stores of heat, making our voices heard LOUD, and bringing resources together.

While these actions have resulted in revival, the process has sometimes dragged on for long periods of time. There has not been a clear process and ultimately, we rely on external power to notice and reward our efforts.

This is not the case for all. A number of players have been granted items that revive the dead, and apparently all of them would require a substantial payment for this service.

As suggested by Fyrd Argentus, it is time to bring this power to the hands of the many.

Our Community Garden has been designed by the whole community over the course of a year, and now it's time for the whole community to see the fruits of our efforts. We want to grow the Revival Fruit in the garden, and make it available to all. Rather than setting a price in gold, what is required is your Time, cooperation, renewable resources, and heat.

For those of you who have not followed the Community Garden development, the garden is designed to work in two ways. There is a plotholder area where gardeners can lease a plot for a season or a year to grow food and medicine for themselves. Surrounding the central plotholder area are a number of garden areas, held in common and tended by the Community Garden leadership. Each of these areas should produce food and medicine in their season to be distributed appropriately in the community (method will vary for each area).

One of these surrounding areas is the forest garden, set on the hillside west of the plotholder area, along the path toward Maple Road. We would like the Revival Fruit to be the primary resource harvested from the forest garden.

We are looking at a number of ideas for how this would work, both the process of growing the fruit, as well as what to do with it when harvested.

At the moment the process centers around two personal items, one held by Phantom Orchid, another held by Fyrd Argentus. These are the Apple Tree Branch and the Bodhran Drum.

Apple Tree Branch - A weathered branch from an apple tree. As told by teh Sibyl, carrying the golden bough of an apple branch is the only means of entering and returning safely from the Underworld.

Bodhran Drum - A wooden drum made from Loreroot oakwood and knator hide. Decorated with crests representing the earth and the forest. On the sides are a symbol of a sun and a moon.

I hope Phantom Orchid will elaborate a bit on the history of the Apple Tree Branch for us. As I understand it, the Apple Tree Branch was used to communicate with Mya Celestia, when she was murdered. It's use has always been associated with death and revival. The Bodhran drum has similarly been a dimensional-shifting, spirit-communing device. Generally the spirits have been from the outer spirit realm, and now Fyrd wishes to focus the drums resonance on the spirits here in our own realm. Fyrd has been drumming and the Apple Tree Branch has been resonating along the same harmonic frequency.

So, how does this all work? Actually, that's up to YOU! We want your input. Here's a few ideas we've been floating.

The plan we have been discussing calls for the community to begin gathering heat (and possibly some rare resources) to affect a change. We think that if enough heat is gathered, the Apple Tree Branch can sprout anew. It would either be planted directly in the community garden to grow into a tree, or it could sprout an apple, whose five seeds would contain the Revive magic. Four of these seeds would be planted to grow four revive apple trees, and the fifth would be saved and protected (likely given to Handy Pockets, our seed keeper). Each of the four trees would provide Revival Fruit in a different season, creating a 3-month guaranteed revival timeframe - provided the community is willing to come together and support the effort. I would like to see Phantom Orchid manage this harvest.

This brings us to the second part. How will the Revival Fruit become useable? Pickling of course! A handful of resources from around the realm would need to be gathered, as well as a significant amount of community heat. And drumming to create harmonic resonance with the fruit. This process would naturally be managed by Fyrd Argentus, our drumming and pickling specialist. He would require a heat gathering device (perhaps the drum) and a cauldron (pickling jar).

The methods in which this could work could vary quite a bit. We could see scene generated Revival Fruit (like herbs and memory stones) harvestable with the appropriate tool. Another suggestion is the development of the Apple Tree as a community driven item, similar to the Fierce Needle of Feebleness, requiring a heat cause in place of a fight cause. Other ideas include the Apple Tree as a first cauldron and the drum or pickle jar as a second cauldron. It's possible that we might want to develop an effective strategy utilizing existing features in concert with ideas for new features to develop a simpler process.

I'd like to open this thread to ideas from around the community. We certainly need ideas for the required resources for each process. We would also like to hear suggestions for other personal items and tools that would make sense as part of the process. We'd like to hear ideas for the development of the mechanics, both using existing features and potential new features. We'd like cauldron recipes in the appropriate format. We also want feedback in general regarding the concept and the process. And of course ideas for other game elements which the community garden can contribute.

STRONG CONTRIBUTIONS WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR A WISHPOINT IF THEY DRIVE THIS CONCEPT TO IMPLEMENTATION.

Let's bring the Community Garden and our dead to life!

The Mirror Quest

Notes:
- The quest is divided into 4 parts;
- Each part will be presented singly, when the previous one is completed;
- Each satisfactory submission will be rewarded with creatures and/or enchanted stones;
- Part 2 and 3 will be reviewed together with 2 judges, who will decide whether to sponsor an additional reward;
- There's no deadline.

Have fun!!!

lashtal reacted to Maebius in Flowers for the Dead
I've worked with Gort Hedera today, who wanted to gather a pile of
Flowers to decorate the Gazebo of Equalibrium. She's places a small bit of magic to the HiddenOrb clickie there, which appears as a little vine, to the left of the central stairs. (where the Heat-vote clickie is for me)

Her collection will accept the ITC of Flowers you have in your pocket,
and count how many individual "bouquets" are submitted to the form,
displaying it in her clickie. If you gather more flowers, you can
add them to the decorations.

Lets make the gazebo as beautiful as the memories we hold around it!

Since these are virtual clickie-flowers, you will still technically
"hold" them in your inventory, but you can pretend they have been
added to the Gazebo. It's the thought that counts, after all, right?

Lets see what happens....

Technical specs:
This is somewhat experimental, and more social-thing than an actual Quest.

Tracks the ID of the flower resource, so trading back and forth to get a new ITC will not work to artificially boost the count.

It also seems that increasing the "Flowers" you carry by getting more quantity may not change the ID, just make the ones you carry more Real. (read: http://magicduel.invisionzone.com/topic/10370-how-can-resources-be-fixed-unsplittable-groups/#entry90038).

lashtal reacted to awiiya in The Council Meeting
This puts me in a somewhat awkward place.

I feel disappointed that the Council could not make an in game meeting, but their reasoning seems believable, and I do agree that a number of people would use it exclusively to determine their identities. I am willing to compromise on that. You addressed the issue at hand, which is what I most wanted.

Even though I still find anonymity distasteful, I will continue to maintain a degree of trust in Mur's original judgment and the Council's ongoing one.

There remains many questions that I would like answered and still consider critical to the realm's understanding of the Council, for instance, how many members and what current projects are rated most highly, but this new role perhaps puts me in a place to find and share the answers to those questions.

I remain as I was before unsatisfied with the Council and believe that a better job could be done, but it would be idiotic of me to turn down the position they offer, mainly because it puts me in a position to fix a good number of my issues: communication being the foremost. Creativity, it seems, is again crippled by coding, but that may find a solution sooner or later too.

I will say this upfront: I am human, and I will fail you at some point or another. I ask that when I do fail you, tell me, so that next time I can fail better.

So, I will accept this position and channel my burning desire to improve the realm into it. This is not an end to the Council-needs-change movement, it's a beginning.

How I look in this role:
How to reach me:
1. I am available in game primarily, on most nights around 7:00 game time give or take a few hours, and available through messages, which will be replied to within a day unless I'm away on a vacation. It should be a no-brainer where to find me, I don't move. I regret that there's a gate that has such a high Action Point cost, but there's little I can do about that.
2. A forum message is a backup, but I would encourage you to find me in game. Who knows, you may have some fun. Remember fun?
3. YIM, email, etc. are not appropriate means of communicating with me. Those who have my YIM may continue to talk to me as usual (which... by usual I mean the barely ever you contact me), but I won't respond to requests related to this role. Apologies.

The information:
1. I will share whatever the Council provides me either in person, in message, or on the forum in the public board. I will not hoard or reserve information for myself. Those who know me know that I promote transparency, and seldom shirk a question.
2. I imagine that Chewett will open up a forum board so that I can carry out the updates that the Council asked for.

This changes little about my current role and function, i.e. expect that I remain a somewhat insane philosopher on the edge of the realm who will confuse you often.

But in communicating with the Council I will be clear and precise. That, I think, you all deserve.

And let's see if this lumbering beast can't be streamlined a little (read: a lot).

lashtal reacted to Fyrd Argentus in wp for Community Garden effort
Vote this up or down with the opinion arrows. Add commentary as you see fit.

Should I grant Rumi a wp for his efforts on the garden specifically so he can give the scene a "Community Garden" type subtext?

Notes: It might actually be necessary to grant it to somebody else with access to that wish shop function, not sure how deep it is buried, but it would be a reward for Rumi's efforts.

I do not wish to be accused of trying to help my own spirit-revive efforts via wp granting, so I'm throwing this out. Perhaps some other wp-granting agency would see fit to do this in my place if my own entanglement with the garden is unacceptable.

Thoughts?
