  2. To take this to an extreme, suppose someone managed to get 666 (or even 66) necrovion land loyalty without being lashtal/samon/eara(?). Does the "without" clause there render it less meaningful? I remember Blackshade Rider going through some difficulties/confrontation to be able to physically remain on/return to gateway. If he views that experience with pride, this seems as good a way as any to acknowledge it. If not it seems like a good way to totally cheapen the game.

Only if you know something is codable -- and know how -- only then do you have a sense of how much willpower is required for it to manifest...and, regardless of where that willpower originates (who votes) it needs to be somehow transferred/channelled... Similar concepts apply to the idea of choosing the right judge/s. Empathy is a must; balanced empathy (avoiding bribes/vested interests) is just. (haha must/just that rhymes)

Goals of voting could be, in order of their perceived importance in my mind: (a) sustained legitimacy/peace -- that people will accept the outcome without simultaneously internalizing a "life is unfair / self-pity is justified / evil is acceptable" mindset (b) empowerment -- individuals should not feel that widespread debate and approval must occur in order for them to independently contribute to results (a) and (c) from their current place in society/the world. (c) practicality/truth -- achieving a favorable result/providing for peoples' real needs In the interest of peace, it seems like the voices of government / "voters" ought to be people who are well-liked and humble, who know how to hear out someone in an abnormal position/mindset and have them know they've been heard...one way to describe this role would be that of judge In the interest of empowerment, it makes sense at the governmental level to have a hierarchy of local- vs. larger- scale government, and at the lowest level an individual person ought to have power i.e. have a vote. Though truthfully empowerment is better served through other media besides government (in particular by ensuring each person has a friend.) truth is difficult: 1. in the case of a situation where multiple parties have a dispute, voting (e.g. judging) should not be allowed for an individual who would for whatever reason end up playing favorites rather than considering individuals' true needs -- this actually hurts even the "favored" side by undermining the vote's outcome's peace/legitimacy. 2. Obviously this is where concepts of debate/free speech/allowing experts to share their positions, become crucial. In this world nothing is simple, and it does not make sense to have an ignorant voting body. However we do not always have access to the best information or to enough time to make a "proper" decision, because...well, because in this world nothing is simple. In particular at the local/individual-vote level it does not make sense to expect people to do research that they may be mentally incapable of doing or of caring enough to do. Screening based on knowledge would have more of a role with higher-level decisions like selecting a judge.

      I'm going to disagree with that statement, actually...I don't think something can be fun without being good.

      I also am not fully confident in the idea of a "good person" or an "evil person".

      Care to elaborate on either of these ideas?

  14. Mosquito At first I wasn't sure if the rumors were true. Then the first swelling appeared, like spots of dew demanding to be tasted, on in this case, scratched and bled. I started to pay attention. Then one day, the first mosquito showed its silent head. in the shower, round it flew Too high for me, it instinctively knew. I didn't know what to do. For weeks and weeks it pestered me (at first it was only one) For weeks, it joined me for coffee and I let it be, if it left me alone. But then, it turned a bit lusty and wanted my blood, still warm and so (oh, the depravity) it landed on my arm. That was it. That was the end. I knew it right away. I poised to make my move but when I moved, it flew away. But then I got a bit smarter started moving all around and waved my arms much harder till they made a windy sound. Sure enough, it assumed I had opened the window and didn't expect my swat its blood that day, not mine did flow and that was the end of that.

  17. A text-to-speech option for Live Chat. (beep, pause a second, then read.) (check for messages from drunk/silvertongue and either don't read them or read them unaltered.)
  18. A list of a player's last ten or twenty login times (server time), available on their player page. I want to know when a person is likely to be around. (Obviously a player would have an option to turn this off, probably located in options/preferences. Maybe by default have it off.)
  19. @Chewett While I can't speak of blackshade rider specifically (especially as I have not read his blog post), I can tell you that one of the most distressing states (for me at least) is seeing a strong emotion in someone else (whether or not it's real) and not being able to connect to them at that point with a responsible action. I would not be surprised if that would lead some to take risks/do explosive things. For me I tend to just go hide in a corner. @Blackshade Rider looking through your forum activity and not seeing any follow-up to this, I'm going to resurrect. the forum really is the perfect medium, like chew says...i too encourage you to open up, especially now that some time has passed.
  20. It happens that the day after I wrote this, I spilled coffee on my laptop, dealing it its death blow. So now I have a different computer. As a result, I can see the forum.   22. Hehe, nope, sorry. Without getting into the details, I'm just not going to have access to internet at home, so I'll just be dropping by the library or Starbucks now and then to do stuff. (In general the temptation to use the internet late at night is just too strong...I've tried putting other restrictions in place and it just doesn't work when I'm alone with a computer. Being decently tech-savvy doesn't help.)
