You enter a hat store, and you see a hat you like, you put it on your head and the owner comes over and breaks your legs.

You demand to know why he did it and want reparations, and he just says: There was a sign in the store 3 years ago that said: "You can't try out hats. Whoever tries one will get his legs broken."

MD is a product... And stuff like this does not help it to sell. Even new people who are interested in MD deeper then the basics won't put up with crap for long, and will leave at some point... And then you'll get what you want: The group of people who has all those fancy spells and abilities given to them years ago playing alone, trying to get rid of their frustrations trough MD.

Also, I wouldn't mind a king pulling out TTL out of Nv for the sake of his citizens... Hey, sure, why not? Heads isn't fair. But the council, who isn't supposed to be biased stepping in and doing it because of an unwritten rule? I mean, come on.

Same thing with moderators who do it to some, and not others.

Ivorak reacted to Chewett in Item Scripting locked to first user
You can edit items in general but this item already has its assigned owner. Only Muratus del Mur (ID:1028) can edit this item.
Currently, the first person to "use" a usable item becomes the sole owner and editor of an item. This causes issues when, for example here, someone previously has also got the item editing ability, and "bound" it to them. Then, when you aquire the item, and wish to code on it, you cannot because they "own" the scripting rights.

But, on the other hand, you dont want to give the item as a quest, and give them the ability to see all the code.

Here i suggest being able to "lock" an item script. This would mean that no one could edit the item except the owner, and it could be toggled. This would mean that you can hand items around for quests and such, and also have the ability to trade items and give others the scripting rights.

This would solve issues where you gain an item specifically for scripting it, and find out you cant because someone else have pressed "use" Before.

I believe this would be the best way to solve this current issue, Comments?

Ivorak reacted to Burns in Honor Competition
Before you get too used to fighting just against one person at a time, I'll go and announce a radically different competition for a change

The objective of the Honor Competition is to reach a certain amount of honor, nothing more, nothing less.
For doing that, everything is allowed, except for leaving the Sparring Grounds during the game.

There is no need to sign up for this competition. I'll announce the time a few days ahead on the forums, and again in the mood panel a few minutes before it starts, together with the amount of honor you'll need to achieve.

I'll be present at all times during the games, logging out or leaving the park leads to disqualification. If something seems fishy to me, i'll do a locate on you to see if you've left the park. Maximum duration of a game will be 1 hour, if nobody gets the exact amount by then, the person closest to it will be declared winner.
Clarification, due to complaints: This means, whoever is closest at the time the contest ends, NOT whoever was closest at some point during the competition. ONLY values stored in the last minute count for this plan B-rule!

To win the competition, you'll need to win 3 games. We'll see how long it takes
During the competition, a button to save your honor on the signpost will be available. Only honor counts saved there count for the competition. Spells to send somebody elsewhere don't disqualify their targets, but their casters.

Rewards depend on participation as usual.

The first game starts on Sunday, 22:00. (Maybe a little later if the finals of the aura competition take longer than expected)

Good luck to all participants, and have fun

First round, May 08, 22:45, goes to Ravenstrider in less than 20 minutes: Ravenstrider 1059 23:04:09. Congrats!

1. The creator is Romanian. His English is better than most who even speak the language, but he does have spelling errors.
2. Grido is doing a one man job in correcting errors. There is a thread in which you can c/p all misspellings for Grido to fix when he can.

Disclaimer: I will use "you" in the below post but I am not referring to someone - it is a general "you".

As usual you're making a big fuss over nothing. Apophys DID not steal anyone's adepts. He offered a JOB! Yes, it is a job because they will get payed for it. Do you have a problem about that? If yes then you're the selfish one. Don't tell people they have no morals or no respect if they wish to do such a thing! Who died and made you head judge?

It's funny: if someone leaves a protector for another but doesn't get payed for he's not a mean person. But if he is payed he's a criminal! Oh rilly? So what if someone is mp6 for a day? This means you can get back your precious adepts. Remember the time when lots of players (me included) went to mp6 juts because after you dropped the spells remained?

I planned to burn few WPs to max the crits I need to max. I think I will drop my plan and become an mp6 and I will pay people to be my adepts for 1 day. It's a fair job.

Enjoy the game!

Can I ask...why is there a need for the garden designs to be hidden?
You certainly can ask and I'll answer the best I can. It's something I have pondered for a while and decided that there might be some benefit to keeping the master design hidden.

The master design will be the coming together of all the other design areas, which will be open to the public. Open forums will include plant lists, artworks, research (at least open for now), and others.

I thought to keep the master design accessible only to participants for a few reasons. One is simply to build anticipation and surprise for those who aren't participating in design. I don't care for secrets, but I love a good completed surprise. Think about the anticipation built when Tribunal became inaccessible and then the excitement at its release last week. A second reason is to give a little something special for those who do participate. I think that the opportunity to view hidden master design process might encourage people to take some small part, where they otherwise would not. Finally, I have seen how people tear each others' creative ambitions apart on the forums, and I would prefer outsiders to wait until we have a more complete project before searching for "holes".

As participants step up and organize alongside me, I will ask their opinions and moderate the forum accordingly. If people would rather have a hidden forum opened, or an open forum hidden, I will go with the will of the community.

I hope this answers your question Grido. If you think it makes more sense to keep it open, I'd be interested to hear your opinion.

Do you think you might want to get involved? I'd love to have you working with us.

As for Chewett's reasoning about how to decide which offer is better, well that would be an easy fix. Allow the creator of the trading system the ability to reject offers and let others see that the offer has been rejected.

I have used the most classical argument in existence: a counterexample.
no facts?
I have used one of the sources which is repeatedly stated as the most important ones for facts about MD, even by the person who created the game.

Things in MD have to be 'intended'?
It is in a perpetual 'alpha' state. There is no such requirement as original intent.

A robot is not a 'race'?
A robot is not a human. Your premise was stated literally as 'humans only, except if the character was created by Mur' Perobotillo was a player who earned his recognition some time long ago. I don't know how and I don't need to. What matters is only that he invented a non human representation and made it so it was acknowledged. If someone wants to play an elf, you have to at least recognise that it is, in theory, possible.

Ivorak reacted to Rumi in Community Garden
Many of you who have met me know that I have been working for quite some time on a design for a garden at the Meeting of the Roads. The design process will continue for some time yet before the first tool is put to the ground and the first seeds are sown. The most important key to a successful garden design is observation of natural processes and human interaction with the existing site. I intend to continue observing the site through a full year before implementation begins. That will likely be sometime around Year 6, between Day 250 and Day 300 (ideally Day 270).

After many months of a personal observation and design process, I feel it is the appropriate time to open the process up to the community. This garden will be constructed on No Man's Land and as such it will belong to the entire community. I will actively work to construct, maintain, and grow the garden to provide for my own needs, but the fate of the garden is in the hands of the entire community. Everyone is invited to cultivate some space and I ask that everyone respect the space.

I will be working as organizer and design facilitator, and I would like to see a core group of dedicated individuals come together to collaborate on this project. If the forum moderators would please grant a dedicated subforum to the Community Garden, this will the primary area of communication.

There are a number of reasons I have chosen the Meeting of the Roads as a garden site. The first is of course, the overlooking of the roads themselves and all the passerby's. It is nice to have visibility of the people and it is nice for the people to see the garden as they go on their way. The other reasons have to do with our endless sunlight and a need for water retention. I see how dry other areas of No Man's Land can be and I think this place will not have that problem. We all know that at the Meeting of the Roads, "Two clouds block one sun's heat". Another important element is the hillside.

The garden is being designed on the south face of the hillside overlooking the meeting of the roads. The primary design element is contour gardening. Hillside contour gardening is in my experience the most effective way to catch and store water in the soil, making the subsoils a sponge and allowing the slow penetration of rainwater in the topsoil. All other design ideas can be wrapped around this initial concept. My current vision has a central tree and sitting area, orchard gardens, an open vegetable garden, and an aquaculture pond, among other things. I have some initial sketches that some of you have seen, and there will be many more maps and sketches before we are ready to proceed with implementation. I suspect there will be many ideas that people would like to see in their community garden, and we will have a collaborative process whereby your ideas can be integrated into the final design, even if you choose not to participate in the core Community Garden group.

The following areas will be part of the group process of creating the garden (this list is not all-inclusive):

Observation of the Meeting of the Roads and the people who pass by
Deeper research of the elements of the Meeting of the Roads including the four cubes, the three roads and their destinations, the Dark Slime which stretches across two of the cubes, the tree by the side of the road and other existing vegetation (This will all probably be developed as a knowledge collection)
Design process, including base mapping and design mapping, plant lists, consideration of soil amendments, infrastructure, community outreach, etc.
Artwork!
Gathering of seeds
Developing a collection of garden tools
Garden construction
Growing food and medicine

If you want to get involved, post here on the forum and state your intended level of involvement. You can also send me a private message if you would like. If you want to speak in person, I can usually be found at the Meeting of the Roads, and you can also send me a message in-game.

Finally, a little spoiler preview. The gathering of seeds will likely involve a series of quests, with a possibility for wishpoint rewards. More details to come as we get closer to that stage.

Thanks everyone for your participation. Let's grow!

Just to set the record straight, I actually am very keenly aware that I'm NOT always right. And that sometimes there is no black and white, just a lot of shades of gray.

I'm glad that folks expressed their opinions, even if most of them differed from my own. And I'm glad that we have a game that allows us to differ and still be friends.

I think, in the end, the point I was trying to make (and perhaps failed at it) was that we ALL (myself included) need to be a little more careful how we say things in messages and such because the written word is different from talking face-to-face. When one reads something, it is really easy to take it a completely different way than was intended because you cannot hear the person's intonation or see their face. That is how things are mistakenly taken as insults.

I think it is time now to close the topic. Thanks, everyone, on your input.

One thing you must learn is there is a fine line between being insulting, and being blunt. If I was being insulting, there are quite a slew of words I would say.

Eon, I know, actually will NOT talk in chat. He does so only on rare occasions. His reason for it is his own reasoning, and I am quite sure that there are a few others whom will not talk in chat.

Edit: TTL pretty much summed this up. Grow some balls, and grow up yourself. If you don't like how it is now, then you certainly will not like MP5.

Oh my, I contradicted myself, must mean I'm a terrible liar and all my goals are for my own personal gain.

To answer you honestly; do opinions not change? It has been almost a half-year since then, what makes you think that I won't have gained new information myself? If you are confused as to what I am suggesting with this thread, I suggest you read it over again, others seem to have it right.
Certainly opinions can change. Just because it can doesn't mean it will or already has. I suppose I could give you the benefit of doubt, however you are mostly reluctant to answer my questions. eg. Going on your 'new information' hypothesis I am met with the question why you haven't shared this new insight. Currently it looks to me you went from 'I don't think it is possible so I don't want to waste my time' to 'I have no idea whether it is possible and hope others do.' At least the other thread contained practical suggestions. Your analysis of why people don't want to share ideas is not exactly providing a solution.

As for others reading it right, I can easily point out two renown people who got it wrong, according to you yourself. I can't say I am wording this nicely, but if you want a good discussion, it sure would help if everybody managed to understand your words without having to read them five times. The only suggestion I see is 'we all get together and share our ideas.' Ideas relating to what? Everything? When? Who will attend? Where? Who will organize it, moderate it? What format?

You do realize that nothing will change your status no matter what you do.
Hopefully, you realize that there is more to this game than simply fighting and therefore arguing against it is going to give others bad impressions of you.

Displaying ways of which people could 'bypass' the game is quite stupid. While you may not have meant it as a threat, I personally, see these as talks of how to get past the restrictions as a free for all for whomever would want to actually deliberately abuse the game on a mass scale.

So, seriously.
Being an alt is nothing bad unless you actually do something to warrant being arrested for it and therefore called a nasty, greedy little crook.

So why did I vote yes?

Because entering Loreroot, while giving the satisfaction of achieving something, is kinda spoilish... And maybe not tha fun on the long run...

Misdirection is wrong. You should not be claiming anything, Nor have anything which would be adding to, or changing what is fact and known about MB.

Making up history is an intresting one, Im prettymuch against it because we have quite a lot of background to base most things on, Im still waiting for someone to make some nice quests based on the shade wars that many players havent heard about.

Espically if you are "misdirecting" people, like you say, because that merely confuses the issue and means that the real lore is merely hidden by people making up rubbish.
Chewett, all due respect etc., I think you are missing the point of what Fyrd is saying. You should read Zelazny if you haven't.

The "real lore" of which you speak seems to be the consensus among a tiny, close-mouthed elite. There is real lore about Marind's Bell? Really? Who knows it? Is the lack of "nice quests" at all attributable to the fact that the "real lore" is nowhere readily accessible to independent researchers, even the leader of an MDA guild? It's all very well to shoot people down for violating canon, but what actually qualifies as canon keeps changing. We have seen recently that the AL itself has been partly disavowed. Where is a quest writer to begin? If he writes from his own array of ideas, he's spewing rubbish. If he bases his quest on "actual" in-game events, he's glorifying the long-dead, no-longer-relevant past. He's between the devil and the deep blue sea.

A ghost has been spotted, but someone clever enough to earn himself a tag at MP3 can't figure out that ghost's identity. What's wrong with this picture?

The idea of presenting a story-based quest with symbolic and setting-appropriate resonance is an intriguing one, but it's no easy task even to conceive. It has been amply demonstrated, quite loudly by you among others, that anything less than that is "made up rubbish" - surely the irony of such a qualifier in a fantasy setting is not lost on you - and that therefore the majority of MD story-related quests are doomed to fail before they even begin. If MD is postmodern, it has no need of (and frankly should reject and even mock the very idea of) canon. If MD is symbolic, Fyrd's archetypes are appropriate. If it is a more standard roleplaying adventure game, it needs hard, immutable, canonical history in a form that quest-writers can consult.

It's not encouraging to see motivated, creative people shouted down. If you see an idea that seems wrong-headed to you, can you not provide some direction to the would-be creator? Or shall we go back to ciphers and "find me [x] adepts" quests?

Ivorak reacted to Fyrd Argentus in Use of pseudo-history in Quests
I am treading near the edge in some of my quest creations. Thought this would be a good place to discuss.

The issue is finding a balance between being totally unique and creative, and trying to fit into the MD realm and it's rich imagery.

Step one was using MD figures in my riddles - Drachs, birds, Windy's Pub, lore guards, etc. This is balanced against making up the distant realm of "Queen Esmerelda" as one of my prior abodes. I mingle it a bit having a Knator mentor in the distant land of my birth that was a refugee from MD. (see my papers).

Step two is the back-story for my lost path adventure. There is a Princess and Imperial soldiers that are shadows of Marind's Bell - but shadows only. I definitly can't take it upon myself to write unfounded history of MB, especially after the Ancient MB Lore fiasco (see forum). This Princess is NOT Marind herself... though it is fun to hint and misdirect. But here I am claiming there was once some OTHER princess in MB...

On the flip side, I use a number of spectral monsters that are reminiscent of the monsters clearly from other realms (mummy, vampire, werewolf, etc.)

How best to proceed as I expand on the story of the Lost Path?

The characters I am developing have flavor and backgrounds, easily affiliated with the 4 main lands. Should I simply claim they are from those places? Or should we just consider that a "translation" of where they are really from? These lands are archtypes, and resonate with similar places in other realms.

I use the word "Shadows" above advisedly - in the sense of Roger Zelazny's Amber series. That the real world casts an infinite number of shadow worlds through the dimensions that are almost but not quite the same as the one next door....

Unless I hear arguments that convince me to take a different course, here is the "Party Line" I am going to be following....

Any reference by me (or another player) in a quest to a land for "flavor" is refering to a "shadow" of the real MD realm. I as a player can't presume to make up "new" MD history, but any history I make up for the quest can be found resonating with the real MD off in some other dimension. My musical magical abilities to wander between dimensions is meant as a justification for that, and the reason I can "strengthen" these resonances between worlds and make it possible for MD players to interact with things.

So references IN MY QUESTS to spirits of a King, Queen, Princess, and Prince of the archtypical four lands are really reference to resonant spirit shadows drawn out of other dimensions..... not to be taken as straight MD historical fact.

This issue really cuts across any creative writing of stories, quest, songs, personal papers, etc. that brush up against MD history. How free should we feel to make claims and inferences, and make up supposedly historical figures of greater or lesser importance?

Anybody care to weigh in on this subject?

Postscripts:

Chewett - I did not mean actively misdirect. But if one mentions a princess and MB, people leap to all kinds of assumptions, as clarified in Mur's "Show of Force" thread.

Awiiya - I obviously feel I am creating something of intrinsic value here, or I would not be doing it. I see MD as an evolving community project rather than something frozen in perfect crystal. Sorry you are so easily repulsed by this distraction. Quests are of course optional - this is a GAME, after all.

What makes a story "nice"? The issue I'm trying to raise is not about teaching vs. entertaining or such, the issue is about style. In a nutshell, should we try to integrate our work seamlessly into the MD milieu (as we should with artwork) or should we do something distinctly and unambiguously different, thus emphasizing the patch-work-quilt nature of the MD community?

Ivorak reacted to Kay Ingild in The four dimensional shape equivalent of sound
I don't have any experience myself with synaesthesia, but I can't help but be curious…

If you have sound-shape synaesthesia and are listening to the exact same piece of music, do you experience the exact same shape each time? I am not talking about new performances of the same music, as those can be subtly different, but something like a recording, where the only thing changing over time is the listener. Have you ever experienced this four-dimensional shape as being slightly different - perhaps as you grow more familiar with the composer, or the piece, or the style of music? Or is the shape always identical, but you sometimes notice or focus on different aspects of it? Or is it even possible to remember or "pin down" the shape enough to notice if it is the same or different from before?

I hope that my questions make any kind of sense!

Let us get this straight. You mean besides the Ancient Lore, is the AL a myth as well, at least the part Ren's wrote (and this part is ... ?!) ? And that was only exposed after our Memorial Service? So the AL, the part that should be one of the most reliable sources of information about MD, where I should base my questions and discover "secrets" is false?

It means that if none of this had happened I would continue to appreciate what is written and think about them and how them happened, while the fossils and otheres that know the facts better remain quiet, silent and dumb. Saying for some questions I ask that the answer is secret while others questions are politely ignored?

And while the quest was going on because no one argued the action was wrong act, and remained silent until now? Why did not try to correct the mistake while it was in process? Are you on a pedestal so high that it can not bend and steer the others that are in the wrong way?
