1. Many of you have noticed Rumi has not been particularly visible this past month or so. I just bought my first house and the purchase, and now painting, and soon moving has been taking up a lot of time. I have simply not made much time for MD, beyond logon for AD and free credits. It may continue like this for a little while still. I'm sure you're all wondering about that garden project that was finally beginning to build momentum and then disappeared from the radar. We've had a lot of changes in the realm recently, including the loss of an entire kingdom among other things. All sorts of new tools and items have become available, many of which will directly and indirectly affect the development and function of the garden. One of the principles of developing a successful garden is the observation of natural and human patterns in order to design a garden which utilizes existing energy flows, rather than creating new ones, which may run counter to existing ones (and thus creating more work). I intend to continue to observe many of the new concepts and changes before the design of each of the specific areas, so that everything can be appropriately incorporated. In the initial post on the garden thread, I suggested the garden design might be complete by day 270. That has now passed and we still have quite a ways to go. That thread was started on the sixth anniversary and perhaps the garden design will be complete and implementation will begin at the seventh anniversary. No reason to hurry it. If people have ideas for the garden, I encourage you to continue to post in the community garden forum. If you have quest ideas, send me a message and I may be able to use one of the community garden wishpoint rewards if appropriate. Rumi will continue to be online for brief periods logging AD and free credits. The primary role activity will be practicing and learning rain spells (stones donated so generously by Amoran and Marvolo since the advent of memory stones). Rumi will continue to practice these rain spells until he learns them in a more "permanent" way. If you notice a mild or heavy rain, please feel free to come to the Meeting of the Roads to dance and celebrate. While you may not see Rumi too often in the near future, you can always send a game or forum PM if you need to contact me and I will respond quickly. The council has asked me to be one of their representatives on the forum and I will be fully available in this capacity. I will also keep active on the forums (albeit in a more limited way for now). Thanks everyone and I'll see you around. Rumi - AD 400
  2. Another group of 5 sc was donated (either by Hedge Munos or Etluhcs Teragram - same player, dif. alts) several weeks ago. Hedge, please contact me so we can record the details of this transaction. Current funds - 10sc - held by Rumi
  3. After an additional 2 months of this quest being open, the time has come to close it out. For a number of reasons, I have not recently made time to work on the garden development, and I apologize to all those who made quest submissions. I have not forgotten about you. Without question, the clear winner here is Brulant, whose excellent design submission is absolutely a model for how to design a garden as far as I'm concerned. He wins a wishpoint for this work. Any veterans who have seen his submission and want to give a suggestion as to the kind of WP score this merits, please send me a personal message. I won't base the score on your suggestions, but I will certainly take them into account. Everyone who offered creatures as quest rewards, I thank you and you may do with the creatures as you wish. They will not be given as rewards for this quest. If you wish to offer them again, contact me at the time of the next quest. The 5 sc (now 10 sc) in the community garden treasury remain and will likely be used for the purchase of construction materials and will also not be given as rewards for this quest. There will be another design quest coming soon, in which citizens of each of the lands will have specific areas to work on. As you all may have guessed (and some of you already know) each part of the garden is associated with a different land. More on that soon Thanks everyone for your submissions and support. Keep it coming... And don't forget to water Evil Bob. He gets thirsty just like the rest of us.
My apologies for the LOOOOOOOOONG delay in addressing this suggestion for the community garden. I like a lot of these suggestions and I hope many of these plants continue through to the final design. A few thoughts. Some of the trees you have selected for an upper canopy would be more appropriate for low canopy trees, such as apples. Fruit trees almost always fill the role of low canopy trees, which are easy to harvest from. Nut trees more often play a role in the high canopy, which is fine for a harvest which takes place after the nuts drop, rather than still on the tree like many fruits. Willow, maple, birch, and pine are also appropriate high canopy trees. I'd like to see this extended out to some ideas about yields from these trees. For instance, maple yields maple sap (and thus syrup and sugar) in the right climate. Do we have that climate? Similar questions about yields of the other high canopy trees. Low canopy trees and shrubs recommended could have some recommended yields. Many of these woody plants are used in ornamental landscaping, and don't always play a role in an edible/medicinal garden. I'm interested to see how you might use some of these plants and I might like to see more edibles. Definitely berries. You have some good suggestions for the herbaceous layer. The herbaceous layer should not be confused with a layer of culinary/medicinal herbs. In this case herbaceous means non-woody plants. This would include just about every annual vegetable commonly grown. Ideally, we are looking for perennials and self-seeding annuals for the forest garden. A few types of plants which fit this niche well are ramps, jerusalem artichokes, and non-woody berry plants. I'd like to see some suggestions for ground layers, root layers, and vine layers. This is a good start and I think we can work with it.
  5.
It was said Eon won it and may use it as he see fit.... it is not exactly true - as it cannot be switched off every time Eon wants to train he inflicts skilldamage.
Since Eon earned skilldamage, I have been slowly reducing my stats for a month. As you all know, I spend most of my time at the Meeting of the Roads, which is not (or was not before a week ago) a sanctuary. I don't really train so I haven't reversed any of these losses, but I also haven't spent much time online recently (separate topic about that coming soon), so I haven't incurred significant stat losses. As much as Eon's skilldamage is unpleasant, I really like the fact that there is a demon wandering around the realm preying upon us poor unfortunate souls. It really adds a fun dimension to the game that perhaps requires a little tweaking to not ruin everyone else's gameplay experience. I would propose a modification to Eon's skilldamage that would keep the menace active, while not scaring the entire class of mp5 into hiding. I think Eon's skilldamage should go into effect when (he/she?) chooses by choosing 'skilldamage' as a fight cause. Furthermore, I think that the number of 'skilldamage' fight causes could be limited to a certain number per spell/ability counter recharge period. This might be accomplished by giving Eon an item (maybe some kind of jewel or something) that grants this ability, rather than it being permanently bestowed on the character. This way Eon (and everyone else) can see how many charges remain at any given time. I think the granting to Eon of such a powerful jewel would still be consistent with the 'power option' granted by victory in the BHC. I don't know what an appropriate number of 'skilldamage' charges on a jewel would be. The first number that comes to mind is 300 charges, enough to let Eon fight for skilldamage in 20 fights every day. It's enough to really pile up if Eon wants to really punish someone, and small enough that Eon could exhaust a day's worth of charges in one trip to GoE or MDP. I don't know if this proposal belongs as a separate topic. If so, I request the mods move it to a new post (an possibly add a poll about good idea/bad idea?) I'm also interested whether people would come out from hiding if they know that Eon can blast them any time, but not every time. EDIT: additional benefit - seeing the trigger box flooding with skilldamage fight cause is a recognizable sign that Eon is on the rampage.

Just reinstalled D2: LOD earlier today... no b.net CD key so I need to play on a non-b.net server, but it'd be great to do a teamplay.

  20. Mint is a very persistent plant and can occupy a lot of space if left untended. Of course, the nature of a garden is to be tended, so perhaps we needn't worry. Some plants require more time and energy than others. Mint, like running bamboo, crown vetch, and many other plants will occupy a lot of ground quickly with persistent root growth. This characteristic means additional maintenance is required, and as Pothos suggested, also makes for strong erosion control on hillsides. It takes minimal care to establish these plants and additional care to establish and maintain the plants around them. Like everything else, the trick is to find the appropriate balance. There is, without question, a place for these type of plants, and we would be wise not to overuse them. In addition to containment within pots, there are many types of physical and biological management practices which can keep these in check. These include water containment, animal control, regular harvesting, and biochemical boundaries among other means. side note: i use mint on the sides of hillside contour swales for erosion control in a school garden i have been working on all summer. It needs to be cut back almost every week and that means a lot of mint tea Simplified example drawing below.
