It seems I hold a K-Doc for Community Gardens, now 8 years stale. Rumi started and abandoned some plans here. Phantom Orchid left some stories. We three are the only members. If you are interested in using this tool in some fashion moving forward, talk to me. If nobody is interested, I may convert this to some other purpose.

By force of habit (and a few hiccups), I managed to finish reading the book I started 5 months ago. I browsed the list of herbs I made in the process and wanted to write another 'flora of', but I have doubts about the proper place of each plant. I would like to talk about this, here or in-game. For now, we are dealing with 19 herbs, drawn crudely by myself. The gith, for example, would belong to Golemus, but I can also see it in Marind Bell. The anabasis is 90% GG, but I feel I keep pushing very similar plants on the shores of Golemus. Perhaps the slopes of NML, after exiting the underground? I'd like to put the windflower in MB, as it is somewhat deli…

I wanted to come out with part 2 of MB's flora, but plans are for the conceited. Glasswort would suggest a plant that looks like glass - translucent and bright. In fact, glasswort takes its name from the use people had for it for centuries or maybe even millennia - as a source of soda ash for glassmaking. Since it tolerates salt water well, you can often find glasswort near the sea - or in it. Edible and having plenty of salt already, glasswort is also called pickleweed. Because its leaves are atrophied to fleshy scales and because the two opposite leaves form a sheath around the stem, this herb looks like strange bulky hands coming out of the earth, made of fa…

After browsing various forums, I decided this is the best one to hold my topic, mostly because it seems Rumi tried to bring some botanical knowledge into MD just as I would (I don't know Rumi, though). This text is not focused on the community garden. However, it's directed at the same kind of people that would get involved in the creation of a garden, hence the choice of place. Botanical knowledge, I think, is just another layer that can be added to MD, even if the core refers to introspection and exploration of the mind. I think the creation of self has a lot to do with what surrounds us, in ways we cannot even imagine. I had a little fun trying to illustrate…

Hello all together, I will start working on the community garden project from now on and need you to get involved with "all" of your heart and full of passion for the whole project. From today on you will have 10 days time to think about how you could help and why you would like to be a part of it. I would like to hear from you why you should be one of the 3 I will choose. After I choose 3 of you as permanent "members" we will have a meeting with Chewett were we will talk about the whole project. You need to be: - creative - active - passionate about gardening/resources - honest & reliable It would be great if you could code or draw too. …
IMPORTANT - This is a community project. It's success depends entirely on how YOU support and utilize it. I am giving as much Time and energy as possible right now. We need some other project leaders, and now is the time for you to step forward and step up.
For a year, the community garden project has been the focus of my attention in the realm. Those of you who interact regularly with me surely notice that our interaction has not been so regular of late. Since the beginning of spring, I have been very busy... and it appears that I will only be getting busier. The design of the community garden c…

Greetings MagicDuel Community! So now we're in the middle of May and what's going on in the community garden? I don't know! I haven't been there! Nobody has used the Community Garden Logs! Okay, here's the deal. You've probably all noticed that I barely get online anymore. I have gotten a new (old) MacBook so at least I CAN get online, but there's more to it than that. When I started playing MD, I had a one year old and a two year old kid. Now they're four and five, and I have another six month old baby. When I am at home, I spend a lot more time playing with my family than playing at the computer. In addition to that, I work long hours on an organic farm…

UPDATE: 5/18/13 SIGN UP HERE IF YOU'D LIKE TO BE A PLOTHOLDER. THERE IS NO MASTER LIST, BUT USE THE COMMUNITY GARDEN LOGS SO I CAN SEE WHAT YOU'RE UP TO. The Community Garden will be ready very soon for everyone to begin gardening. We have not begun digging the main garden beds yet, and we need to determine how many plots to prepare and what size to make them. Plots will be available for seasonal (3-month) or yearly lease, with all funds going to the community garden treasury (probably soon to be held independently by TK). For the next month, a seasonal lease on a small plot will be available for free. The seasonal lease for these first plots will go from 8…

Spring is upon us and we're gonna get festive! March 20 is the first day of spring and we will celebrate in the Community Garden @ 4:00st by planting trees on the western slope of the Community Garden to continue the establishment of our forest garden. Bring your seeds, seedlings, and saplings that you want to grow as a shared treasure of the community. We especially love fruit trees, but we are by no means limited to just fruits and nuts. Lets make it beautiful, tasty, and fun! Some ideas have been already shared on the Community Garden Plant List. Anyone who wants to work on …

It's the middle of winter and I know what's on everybody's mind. Spring gardening! The MagicDuel Community Garden will be holding festivals during each of the eight Sabbats of the year. These include solstices, equinoxes, and the four dates right in the mid seasons. These include Groundhog Day, May Day, and Halloween. Gardeners around the world use these dates to determine planting schedules, along with moon cycles (which we will also be observing). These dates will be used for a number of garden events, including plot management at the community garden. This festival will be highlighted by a party the way gardeners party best. WORK PARTY!!! We are going to…

There is a fun new contest coming to MagicDuel. I will leave the details for the Mid-Winter Festival on February 2. I want to give you the basic idea, so you can all begin to prepare as you enjoy the light of the full moon tonight. This contest will in some ways be very similar to a contest hosted by Akasha in Spring 2010. http://magicduel.invisionzone.com/topic/6918-spring-contest/ http://magicduel.invisionzone.com/topic/6920-autum-contest/ One thing that will differ from the original contest is that this contest will muddy the line between the realms, if you take my meaning. Your gardens around the world will impact the MagicDuel Community Garden at the Meetin…

What does contour design look like? These 5 drawings were my original set. I will elaborate on the details of the last two drawings (which include more than contours) further down the thread. I made a very simple cross-section sketch of hillside with contour swales to show how they work.

Many of you who have met me know that I have been working for quite some time on a design for a garden at the Meeting of the Roads. The design process will continue for some time yet before the first tool is put to the ground and the first seeds are sown. The most important key to a successful garden design is observation of natural processes and human interaction with the existing site. I intend to continue observing the site through a full year before implementation begins. That will likely be sometime around Year 6, between Day 250 and Day 300 (ideally Day 270). After many months of a personal observation and design process, I feel it is the appropriate time to o…

All funds and assets of the community garden will be recorded in this thread. The initial post will be updated as funds grow and are used. If you wish to make a donation of funds, tools, or anything else to the community garden, you can post your intended donation on this thread and the initial post will be updated when then the donation is received. Many of these donations will be used as quest rewards for seed and garden quests. If you wish to sponsor a particular quest, feel free to elaborate when you offer your donation.
If you like the idea, then we shall select the grape variety. For that, it would be better to know the nature of the soil (clay, sand....) so that we find an adequate type. I could help finding an unknown variety (no Cabernet or Merlot or any famous grape of course), that would give good results.
Passant the Weak has brought up a very important research topic that we might as well tackle first. How do we determine the soil texture (particle size)? Sand is comprised of enormous particles, compared to silt, which is comprised of enormous particles compared to clay. Each of these soil textur…

This thread will be the place to suggest ideas for plants for the garden. Feel free to add a plant you wish to see grown at any time. This is a great way for anyone who might have commitment hesitation to contribute something little and important. Part of the discussion in this thread will be the grouping of plants into guilds. Guild design has been discussed in the general Community Garden thread as well as the design thread. Anyone interested in plant guilds can find a lot of information with a Google search. The basic idea is grouping plants together that supplement each other with nutrients, minerals, and protection, and compliment each other's niches in space …

I'd like to set up a structure to record a log of weather events in the realm. I have a couple ideas and I'd like people to comment with thoughts on these ideas and some ideas of their own. First, I wonder if a clickie can be coded to automatically record triggers. This would be a simple way to do it. Scripters, can this be done? Second idea, we need a social structure that gives 24 hour attention to weather logs. This seems like a daunting task. The only group I can think of that has guaranteed 24 hour availability is LHO. I wonder if LHO could record the weather for us and post a log on a clickie in the Paper Cabin as part of their duties. Community Garden…

Day 125, Year 7 Rumi constructed an A-frame level from items in his inventory. 3 branches 11 unidentified plants 1 Locate Stone Rumi's hori-hori (digging and gardening knife) and 2 raw glass were used to determine and mark dead level on the A-frame cross branch. The 2 raw glass were returned to Rumi's inventory. A Locate stone was chosen for the plumb-bob since the primary purpose of the tool is to locate and map a contour from any given starting point. Fyrd Argentus joined Rumi during the process of constructing the A-Frame.

Each of these murders has resulted in a flurry of community action, and all have eventually led to the revival of the dead. We've shown that the community can come together and express a collective action, ga…
How is this coming along Rumi, I remember donating a bunch of lumber earlier, I wonder what sort of progress, and goals you are looking at. Could you state those for me, so I have a clear idea of what is going on?
A few people have expressed to me the same question, so I will answer as best as possible. This thread regards the order of operations for the garden creation. The beginning is observation. The observation process resulted in choosing a site for the garden, and continues with research about the realm as a whole and the Meeting of the Roads scene. Appropriate design is ABSOLUTELY t…

'Lo all! I quite enjoy this garden plan. So, I thought to get things 'rolling', I'd start this fundraising event. I will be telling stories I've written. You can criticize me all you want, but if you like them and you feel like donating, I would be happy to accept. All proceeds go to the building of the garden (research, equipment, etc.). Others are welcome to join in the storytelling. However, if you are wanting to donate to the garden, and not invidiuals, please send the silver to me, and I will be sure to note the donations on the appropriate thread. I hope to see you there! A certain time, date, and location will be set as soon as I have a decent amount of storie…
