My apologies for side-tracking this thread. I hope to further discuss community garden resource/item logistics in its own thread as we come closer to the final design.
this community garden fits in a way with the herbs resource..isnt it?
I don't know if herbs would include all harvestable plants, or if food items would be a separate (similar) kind of item. The garden design includes sections for both culinary/medicinal herbs, as well as food items. Ideally, each community plot would be leased for perhaps a three month season. The harvest at the end of the season will depend on the crops the player chooses to cultivate and what kind of energy they put into cultivating the crops. These crops should be immediately identified at the time of their harvest. Both cultivation and harvest would require the use of certain (public) tools and resources (ie: water). The other sections of the garden which are not community plots would also produce regular harvests, some of which would be available to the general public (anyone passing by) and others available to specific groups/individuals (ie: certain garden elements associated with specific lands). This aspect of the design is currently under consideration and ties in with the current garden design quest (http://magicduel.inv...d-design-quest/). Mur, if you wish to discuss details at this time, please contact me. Otherwise, I will wait to contact you until we come closer to a final design. Again, my apologies for side-tracking this thread beyond the discussion of public tools for the garden.
If you remember long ago there was a test in wasps totem, LR, about fancy items. Most of you consider it was a long forgotten incomplete feature i did and left hanging. Very true. Only that there is a reason why i did it and qhy its not finished, apart my sudden shifts of mood. That incomplete feature is a structural arch in the architecture of md, if its done too soon will make the construction callapse, if its done too late other features will take its place. Its purpose? adding a drop of cyclicity to the system. Some items might in the far future be common tools provided by the land , rented, and that return periodically to their place. By that, the industry so to call it, will remain with a stable structure of available tools, regenerable resources, guilds, etc, and will not depend on people vanishing with toold due to inactivity. shared items.
I noticed that wasps totem can store items of some kind and I heard something about special items used there. I would like to see this kind of a system implemented for a community garden toolshed, which would allow users to harvest from the spaces they cultivate.

Perhaps this belongs in a separate topic... Have wishpoints ever been used for anything other than item crafting or wish shop acquisitions?
-
I have spent 4 WP in the shop and I also show 5 invisibles. It appears they unlock at the same rate, either way.
-
Dunno if the answer is a spoiler. Mods?
-
Does spending a wish to craft a role item continue to unlock the wish shop or are wishes in the wish shop only unlocked by wish shop acquisitions? Thanks everyone.

I have a silvertongue stone for sale or trade. I did an experiment with silvertongue before enchanting and so this stone will only grant 2 casts. Reply here or PM on forum or in-game. You can, of course, find me in person at the Meeting of the Roads. After the next spell recharge period, I will regularly have available 'locate' and 'silvertongue' stones. I will post a new topic at that point.

Brulant's plant guild entry is incredibly well done and an excellent example for anyone considering making a plant guild design submission. I encourage anyone interested to examine his design and add any ideas or suggestions you might have. The following are my observations and suggestions.
- Aquatic plants for the following reasons: 1. Supplemental filtration - plants absorb ammonium, nitrates and phosphates. 2. Plants also assimilate other undesirable substances, such as metals, from pond water to improve water quality. 3. Supply food and shelter for fish and other organisms. 4. Compete with algae through the intake of essential nutrients, while shading the pond from light. 5. Helps keep a biological balance. 6. Helps prevent water from overheating.
7. Mulch crops 8. Food (for people)
- Some sort of shore plants. I personally would suggest a shade tree as well as some low-key ground plants for nitrogen recycling and weed competition.
You might also consider wetland plants that don't actually touch the shore, but surround a pond and drink in water in pond water through the earth
- Organisms that inhabit the pond. A relatively small ecosystem, moving from "first tier" species such as plankton and algae, to "second tier" herbivorous fish. I believe that the pond would be too small to introduce carnivorous fish. However, even with a seemingly small introduced ecosystem, nature should flesh it out as varying forms of invertebrate and vertebrate come to inhabit the area.
I think the development of a pond ecosystem which supports first level carnivores is a worthwhile goal. First level carnivores can be a reliable food source. The same with small crustaceans
- Hardy Lilies: Hardly Lilies are wonderful choices for MD because they both 1) Adore sunlight and heat and 2) Can survive fairly cold and long winters. From this category I would choose Texas Dawns and Pink Grapefruit lilies (mostly because they both bloom quickly and smell nice =).
Excellent choice. I would also like to see some type of lotus.
- Floating Plants: Water Hyacinth is one of the most recognizable pond plants and I believe that it would be right at home in our pond.
I think duckweed or some other small form floating plant would balance the hyacinth nicely.
- Oxygenating Plant: Anacharis is a quick spreading (sometimes dangerously so) submerged plant that helps keep the pond healthy by recycling nitrogen to use as fertilizer while it's fern-like leaves transpire oxygen. It attracts all sorts of aquatic life, including fish and turtles. - Marginal Plants: Cardinal Flowers are absolutely gorgeous bright red marginal plants. They like to be planted on the edges of ponds, keeping it's "feet" wet and it's head high and dry. Beyond their aesthetic beauty, Cardinal Flowers benefit the pond by keeping algae at bay. As a color contrast I would also add Black Magic Taro and Pickeral Rush, both of which are easy to grow and are great natural filters. - Cattails: All ponds need Cattails. Enough said.
Consider adding wetland plants, as mentioned above. Also, think about strong filtration plants, particularly other reeds and rushes. One particularly notable plant would be papyrus. Food plants? Watercress? Water chestnut?
- A Willow: I would suggest planting a Willow (preferably Weeping) on the opposite shore of where the Cattails would be concentrated. Willows are great for shade and to sleep under =)
More trees, and different types
- Fish: I'm not exactly 100% sure that we have fish in the Realm, but we have a statue of one, so they much be around somewhere, yeah? Fish (and other aquatic life forms) are a needed addition to almost any pond. A pond with no fish is like a circus with no clowns. It's still a pond, but the experience isn't quite the same.
I'd say the statue of a fish indicates to me that fish are known to exist. You might come up with a few fishy candidates. Mosquitofish make for an excellent herbivore and provide an additional functional yield.
1) Keep the oxygenating plants far away from the Lilies 2) Lilies in the middle? Meaning that the oxygenating plants would have to be closer to the edges . 3) Cattails opposite the Willow 4) Marginal plants in small clumps instead of all the way around the entire pond. Too many marginal plants just looks gaudy, and we need room for the oxygenating plants. 5) No marginal plants in front of the water flow into the pond.
6) Reeds and other filtration plants should line the water flow into the pond
Their relationships can be summarized as thus: Oxygenating plants reduce nitrogen in the water and create oxygen for the fish which need the shade from the Lilies, Willow, and floating plants. The floating plants cut down on algae spread and keep the pond mostly clean which is further helped by the marginal plants filtration. One big happy micro-ecosystem.

1) There's the obvious yields from the fish: Food, oil, scales, bones… etc. 2) Willow bark contains salicylic acid, which is the active ingredient in Aspirin if my memory serves. Boiling the bark to create a tea would create pain medicine. 3) It smells nice, and, lets face it… who doesn't love ponds?
4) Edible plants 5) Flowers 6) Mulch 7) A host of crafts can be made from reeds Anything else?
Many of the pond plants that I have picked out are incredibly invasive. It will take a constant watchful eye in order to keep the pond in check and looking nice. Other than that, many of the plants I have chosen don't require much more than planting them. Supporting the Willow's growth in it's early stages would perhaps be the most time consuming thing.
'Invasive' denotes a human quality, or more specifically a human action. It refers to a relative or subjective trait, rather than an absolute or object trait. How might you more specifically describe the 'invasive' species you have outlined? Are they persistent? prolific? resilient? opportunistic? What qualities do they have that helps them hold their own ground and expand into others?
1) I was thinking that the Willow could come from a cutting/the pollen of The Willow located on Willow's walk. 2)The Cattails could be transplanted from Raven's Peace in Loreroot. 3) I would suggest placing rocks around the edge of the pond from the beaches in Golemus. 4) Coat the bottom of the pond with sand from Necrovion. I hear that there's sand there. Ideally, all four main lands would be represented in the pond, but Necrovion and Golemus are a bit of a stretch.
Does any land stand out for you as strongly represented by the pond?
It's like saying I can't sell a BW Joker for the joker's price instead of the aramors price... Sounds silly to say no I cant.
Why make an issue of this? Just buy a GG, use your wish for upgrade, and sell the windy. You accomplish the same thing and it's all legit. No grey area.

I am removing the deadline for initial submissions for this quest. As of today (Day 210), I will begin the second phase of discussing submissions with their creators, and working toward furthering the design process. This will be a public process, and everybody involved with the garden is encouraged to participate. Quality submissions continue to be eligible for a wishpoint. All submissions must be submitted in the plant list thread http://magicduel.invisionzone.com/topic/9588-community-garden-plant-list/ If you have made a submission in the quest thread and not the plant list thread, please add it there now.

This is a standing request until I acquire one. Please PM if you have one; let me know if you would consider selling and for how much.

The Cauldron available for a public test!
Rumi replied to Muratus del Mur's topic in Work in progress
As a gardener, Rumi would have many uses for the cauldron for cooking food and medicine from plants harvested from the garden. I thought, however, that it might be fun to craft something a little different during this practice period with the cauldron. Some of you have occasionally walked by the Meeting of the Roads and found Rumi not in meditation on the hillside, but down in the middle of the road, kicking around a footbag (in what he calls "a game of prayer"). Do you want to play a game? I have been wanting an inventory footbag and this seems like a great way to make one. This is a simple craft recipe, which requires few ingredients and a number of steps. Required tools Leather Needle Knife Required resources Young knator leather (grasan leather might make a better suede, but I'm more partial to knators) Sand Thread (alternatively, the leather needle, knife, and thread could simply be a 'leather sewing kit' tool, and sand and leather would be the two ingredients) I am a little confused regarding "device" and $item['name']. Do these refer to the cauldron itself? I'm not sure what you would call a device or machine in which you sew together a craft. Certainly not a cauldron. Maybe a sewing circle? Stitch 'n' Bitch? [log=Sewing a knator suede footbag]
<?php //adapted to md world $instr['title'] = "Footbag"; //the description will be the only thing to describe the needed steps to the ones that try to help you prepare the recipe //be sure you include all steps in it but tell it so that they wont be identical words with the steps defined below $instr['description'] = " This is a simple craft recipe for a young knator suede footbag, filled with sand. This particular design creates a truncated icosahedron footbag. You will need to collect the leather of a deceased young knator and a bit of sand. You will also need a leather sewing kit. First, cut the knator leather into 20 equilateral hexagons and 12 equilateral pentagons, all with the same side length. Line up the pieces in a pattern. Each pentagon should be surrounded by hexagons and each hexagon should border three pentagons and three hexagons. Begin sewing the pieces together with seams through the back sides of the suede. If you correctly follow the pattern, the result should look more and more like a sphere with each seam. When you come to the last seam, sew half the stitches and stop. Pull the entire bag inside out through the hole so the seamless suede face is exposed on all sides. Add the sand to the bag. Complete the seam with a blind stitch and a strong knot, and adjust tension until the seam disappears completely. What an exciting topic http://magicduel.invisionzone.com/topic/9641-food-and-medicine/
One other suggestion for 'bases' is to break it down by parts of plants: Roots Bark Leaves Flowers Fruits

Alternatively, you could catagorize by biological anatomy -- flowers, leaves, bark, root, fruit, nuts/seeds.

"flowers" can be a category too, could extend use of herbs a lot.
Our trees have various harvestable parts, such as resin, lumber, branches, and bark. These are physically different things to harvest and hold, and each has a different use. An entire plant is sometimes harvested to acquire a root. Otherwise, a person usually harvests some specific part of the plant. (Roots often make strong medicine and harvesting could require a higher skill of identification than harvesting other parts.)
herbs will be in large quantities, after gatjering them, or while gathering them, many will go wasted. I need a good name for useless unidentified herbs, basically field flowers and grass that becomes hay, sort of. Its not hay..i cant find a word for it. In this way you could waste very large quantities of gathered plants to find a rare herb (need a name too)

Does the word compost work? Or maybe humus? (No, not hummus, humus.)

Fodder is another name to use for dead weeds. Compost generally includes garbage and scraps too.
One way to look at compost (another very useful product of mother nature) is green and brown (nitrogen and carbon). What Mur is referring to is brown material. Green material would include fresh herbs, along with food waste, manure, etc.
for gathering you will need a tool , at least to hold them. There will be baskets, unless better idea comes up. I want herbs to be the most accessible resource, so these tools will be crafted from other resources, unlimitedly. Will be nice to see what happens when anyone could eventually get a tool..there are major consequences you probably don't realise yet.
There are many types of harvesting tools for herbs, mostly various forms of blades. I would say the two important categories would be a harvesting knife and a trowel (or hori-hori) for roots.
so far we have: "Aromatic herbs" "Tea leaves" "Toxic plants"
The classifications of herbs that has worked best for me is as follows: Nourishing - Gentlest herbs, similar to food, no side effects Tonic - Improves mind and/or body focus, cumulative, rare side effects Cleansing - Stimulates immune system, not recommended for repeated or regular use, large doses often include side effects Toxic - Strongest herbs, overdose danger, generally includes side effects Culinary herbs are generally in the first two categories. A tea can be made from any of these types of herbs, and most teas we commonly drink also fall into the first two categories. Smoking herbs can fall into any of these categories as well. The herbal dictionary on this midwifery website has more detailed definitions as well as an extensive alphabetical list of medical use classifications and other technical terms (could be useful for identified item descriptions). http://www.preciouspassage.com/herbal_dictionary.htm This is a great opportunity for everyone thinking about herbs. One of the areas which needs designing in the community garden is the terraced herb garden. A wishpoint can be earned and there has yet been no submission for the herb garden design. http://magicduel.invisionzone.com/topic/9998-plant-guild-design-quest/ Side note of precaution and general rule of thumb for regenerative ecology. Well established herbs should be harvested no more than 1/3. Rare herbs should be harvested no more than 1/10.
Obviously, and I support this action (just not with my coins >>), because it's silly to make a huge issue/forum post (same thing) about resources at one location.
http://magicduel.invisionzone.com/forum/130-guardians-of-bob/

The Meeting of the Roads is part of No Man's Land and is represented by no man. Today, I am speaking for the Meeting of the Roads. I spend a lot of time there and I hope some of you will be spending more and more time there as well. There are two memory stones which can be harvested from the Meeting of the Roads. In the time since I learned about memory stones, the Meeting of the Roads has consistently had 0/2 stones. (At this very moment, I notice 0.25/2 has regenerated. I'm guessing this fraction of a number is because of new changes). I have been disheartened to see the available resources harvested to depletion with such immediacy. Depleted resources are now renewed at such a slow rate, and I feel it is important to speak up. The land provides many things for us and we have every right and reason to enjoy the abundance that is provided. I would like to see the abundance honored and not abused. I request that the gatherers of memory stones always leave one stone remaining at the Meeting of the Roads. By doing so, you show respect for the abundance and encourage further abundance. In many cultures, stones are sacred ancestors, treated with reverence. Stones are not organic matter, yet they degrade and become the dust from which all organisms are borne and to which all return in death. Dust is infused with life and becomes rich soil and every other living thing. The stones we so often see as inanimate objects are the link between a living planet and its constituent organisms; literally, the building blocks. These memory stones are new to us and we know little about them. We have learned that our thoughts and memories can be transfered through the stones, and we know little else. Before a stone is harvested and our thoughts are transfered, it's possible that a memory stone gathers its own memories. Perhaps it remembers our conversations. Perhaps our prayers. Perhaps it remembers the rain. Leaving a single stone remaining would ensure the continuation of those memories and possibly prove to be to our benefit. Thank you for your consideration.

It doesn't appear that I will be able to attend the 'Stories in the Garden' event. Please be sure to record the stories and perhaps they can be written on a garden clickable in the future, similar to the stories in the Oak Log by Awiiya. Proceeds from this event may go toward the Plant Guild Design Quest. Hedge, please contact me after the event and we can discuss further. Thanks for making this happen.
-
This quest has now been sponsored with a Wishpoint. The submission period will be extended to day 210, giving about three weeks.
-
This quest has been additionally sponsored with a heretic archer, an elemental, and an unholy priest, all fully aged.

I am in need of aspiring designers! The community garden is moving forward and we need to develop plant guilds. Anyone interested in participating should look at Community Garden Plant List as well as the other threads in the Community Garden Forum to learn about plant guilds and how to design them. All entries should be posted on the plant list page. Entries should include the following information: Plants in guild Desired forms of plants (ie: which plants are canopy, how vines are trained, layer density, pruning, etc.) Explanation of functional relationships List of yields List of needs Relation of guild to the realm There may be other required information. Check back for updates. The best contribution will receive a wishpoint. Additional submission rewards include 5 silver coins, a pimped grasan, and an elemental, 2 heretic archers, and unholy priest. Sponsors include Phantom Orchid, Etluhcs Teragram, and Falronn. This quest is ongoing during this phase of the design. After day 210, the review process will begin for work already submitted. When this part of the design is complete, there will be other design quests, so everyone has a chance to get involved

The next phase of the garden design is the development and elaboration of each of the elements shown in the design map. In addition to the varying infrastructure, each area will have different sets or "guilds" of plants which will define them. A well designed guild will have varied form, a variety of functional interconnections, redundancy of function to provide resilience, and a diverse array of yields. What that will look like will be different for each element. The plant list thread will be the primary place to post plant guild ideas, and I encourage anyone who participates to choose a single element and really think about how you might develop it. In addition to yields and ecological niches, consider the nature of each element and how it relates to the realm. I would like to see all the lands represented in garden, whether in form, function, plant species, etc. Feel free to incorporate the species already suggested. The following areas need plant guilds. This post will be updated as potential guilds are discussed and become recognized guilds. Orchard Forest Garden Central Sitting Area Perennial Flower and Berry Patch Pond Corn, Bean, Pumpkin Patch Culinary & Medicinal Herb Garden (Grape arbor is already designed and community plots designs will be determined by those who garden them)
