Happy birthday! -
Hmm...I think I'll start wishing people well in these threads. Sorry to all that I didn't say anything to - I didn't think I'd stick for so long... Happy birthday, may you have it good for the year that follows.

The idea of creating a MD board game just came to me a couple of days ago, so I started working on it. Everything seemed to be in place, soon it was testing time, but then I got this awful cold (that hasn't passed yet) and I had to stop. Now, I would do the testing and present you the final version, but I'm not feeling so well atm; at the same time, I can't get this little game out of my head...so I'm throwing it here as it is and, if it's any good, maybe somebody will add the finishing touches. I like the way it looks, but in terms of game mechanics, a bunch of things can go wrong and also, there needs to be excitement when playing, I don't know if what I made delivers.
First of all, the board is this one: http://storenow.net/download/ce601023b5e9a339d07ebe58eb81ecfc/game.jpg There are a few artworks there and the ones that matter are: Angien: There is one angien on the board. The purpose of any player is to reach the angien. Whoever has the most heat when reaching the angien wins. The maximum heat one can accumulate is 4400. Shade army: Just as there is one angien, there is one shade army. However, the army has 4 shade sentinels, each occupying the center of the 'bases'. The sentinels split into 4 shades each, as shown into the bottom base square, at the beginning of the second round (if you are on a black tile at the beginning of the second round, you will be attacked by a shade). The four new shades split again at the beginning of the third round, when they effectively occupy all the black tiles of the base(s). Aramors: They represent the player. On this particular board, there are 5 aramors, meaning 5 players. Maximum number of players allowed on a board is 8. They start on the yellow tiles at the bottom. Some game mechanics: The "center" of the board is the uplands. There are no black and yellow tiles there and it's where the battles between players take place. The surrounding squares are 'bases' where only battles with shades are allowed. Battles are fought with a dice. Battling a shade means choosing 'odd' or 'even' and throwing the dice. If you guess it, you won. Battling a player means each choose 'odd' or 'even' and then someone throws the dice. Again, who guesses it, wins. If they chose the same and both won, it is repeated (with no more heat gained) until one wins. If they both lost, heat gained is 100 for each. There is no battles between players in the base. Heat gain: heat comes from moving on the yellow tiles in your base (100 heat per each); there is no heat gain from moving on the tiles in the uplands. The other way of getting heat is through battles - attacking gives 100 heat, defending also gives 100 heat, but whoever wins gets an extra 50 heat (same applies to shades, but the penalty for losing is staying the next turn, though you get 100 heat and the AP is regenerated, so you'll have 2 AP when you get to move). Action points: action points are regenerated 1 per turn and you start with one(more players means the starting AP can be increased). You can only move forward, in diagonal or sideways, not backwards. Also, once you moved on a black tile, you can only move on those the next turns, until you reach the uplands (meaning you *have* to battle all shades). The uplands have different action points requirement - to move from the 3rd circle to the 2nd you need 2 AP and to reach the angien from the 2nd circle you need 3 AP. Also, a small exception here - when moving upwards (not sideways or in diagonal) in the uplands, you do get 100 heat per move. Because of the lack of interaction between players when 2 or 3 or 4 are playing, maybe adding leashes would work. A leash is obtained if you defeat a Shade sentinel on the second round and can be used to summon a player to your position in your base.
All mainlands shared tools work the same, it's not only MB. Water is not so hard to get at, you can acquire water by trading, if what you're interested is the resource and not the waterhandling skill. You can ask people for other shared tools that you can use. Ask around and you'll find people willing to share. Resources are placed into your inventory, the buckets are not there to store water, but to collect water. You don't need buckets to have water in your inventory.

I don't think you want people in MD to be "part-time" fighters. Either you are able to defend yourself (which simply means coming up with some defense rituals that work), either you don't fight at all ("kill" your crits or sacc them or don't care about what happens to them at all). You don't ask someone to take your fights, then jump in when you feel like it (or attack others, but let someone guard you - that sounds like bullying). Plus, there is the idea of a protector in the game...perhaps your idea can be discussed as an option for a protector? (I wouldn't call the idea bad, but it needs some twists, because of what I wrote above about "part-time fighters")

Thank you for answering. Not sure what you're saying, it sounds like a gospel/religiously waiting for the divine...

What do you mean by 'may our true king come', klawdees? :P Also, what is the first thing you would do if yo joined MB?

The adventure log is a chunk of MD's history. It's a record (and more), not a reward for roleplaying. Roleplaying is, first of all, playing. Having fun, experimenting, learning new things. As for the 'role' part, I think MD allows some 'serious roles', and I don't mean by that dragons, lizards, dragon-slayers, wizards etc. You can play a slave, a servant, a naive person, a liar. Play, experiment, grasp the possibilities and limitations and you'll have people gravitate around your roleplay when it is good. (the above comes from someone who's not into it. yet. it might be true, though, who knows :)) )

[Christmas Points] The Nightmare Before Murmas

Anyhow, I appreciate it, Juba, but I didn't quite kill anyone, as in actual slaying, as Caretakers would like. A little dead is nice, they say... -

[bug] My tag description doesn't show to other people
Ungod replied to Jubaris's topic in Resolved Bugs
Surely Chewett will make a statement regarding this soon. -
I don't know if there are plans regarding the equipment page, but it seems to me it is long since it has been a priority; I want to present an idea I had about making it unique to each player.
Currently, there are a number of items that serve as equipment and that give certain bonuses; those certainly make one want to explore more of the realm, get enough VP to buy the items etc. But once you've done that, it's the end of that feature and I believe it hasn't been worked on because items in MD are/were custom and role-oriented. So, expanding the equipment page the way it was designed originally would go against what has been going on until now, so I propose further customization.
The idea is to make it possible for (rare) items that one possesses to be included into the equipment page and to be equip-able, also showing on the 'Oscar' doll. As a start, I was thinking about making it possible that (certain) rare items can be equipped in place of weapons. Here is an example of how it would look like: It would serve no other purpose than an aesthetic one, so maybe that's too much effort for something that only looks cool :P

[Christmas Points] The Nightmare Before Murmas
Ungod replied to phantasm's topic in Contests, Quests and Adventures
I'm sorry, I couldn't completely kill anyone in the story :( I started with the intent of killing everybody, it just didn't work out. Message me to remove the story if it doesn't fit. Ailith was climbing the steep rock, her hands grabbing each dint of stone, her fingers beaten and blue. The storm was brewing, there were clouds whirling madly and lightning bolts lit the darkened sky. But she did not look above, she could not hear anything - the deafening wind was trying to lift her and throw her off the cliff, blowing with murderous rage. Blades of wind were cutting the skin, but she kept on climbing, holdding on with all she had. How she got there, Ailith couldn't explain. She got to the top of the cliff, crawled a few steps and lied down, exhausted. She was shivering - her hair ravaged, her hands bloody, her clothes stained with dirt and blood and moss. Her blues lips were murmuring "Enough, enough, please"...And as she lied there, an angry voice said "I didn't allow you to stop yet. Get up, get up!" Ailith woke up and felt the ground with her hands. She got up, twitching, and started walking - ahead, towards a light in the horizon, through emerald-green moss... It was a sunny afternoon when she met him. A pleasant man, with a pleasant smile. He had a mean look in his eyes sometimes, but that's no measure for someone's character. He offered to show her a box of emeralds he discovered in the pastures of the Ivory Island, the place where it was said the dreams take forms of animals and feast on the sleeping ones. Ailith smiled and shook her head. She knew about the island well enough and would not go there for anything. But then he leaned towards her and whispered something in her ear. The next thing she remembered...she was in a boat...then a mist...a green shore...and then, nothing... Ailith was dragging her feet over the rugged ground. Here and there were patches of moss, but she didn't care. She wasn't looking down, she wasn't feeling anything. Her feet were bleeding, she did not feel the soft moss - only slits in her soles. At last, she came to a ruined castle wall. Whatever is this? she thought. "Go inside" she heard. Ailith obeyed. The wall had an entrance and she went through it. She was now in a chapel, an old stone chapel, cold as ice. Ailith felt it burning. There was a stone table, with a vial on it. Rays of light came from the vial and it had golden fillets, spiraled around it's body. Ailith felt the urge to have it. She stretched her hand and grabbed the vial. She looked at the small shining light in her hands. Tears were drawing in it, making it radiate even more light. Whose tears were those? Hers? The chapel started to shake and crumble. Ailith screamed, and put her hands above her head. But she was in no danger. Instead, she was in the mouth of a cave, a mossy cave with a small spring flowing into it. That man appeared and shook his head. "You failed, Ailith. And now you will watch them die." Her eyes filled with terror. "You will stay with me and watch them die, won't you? I don't want to let you go." Ailith looked down. "It was all a lie, wasn't it?" she asked. "You can't kill them, can you?" The man smirked. "No, but I can kill you. If I just break this phial, you'll be in the world without dreams. And that's enough to kill one." Ailith smiled. "You're a wicked man." She got up and dispelled the dream with a wave of hand. "Someone out there has my dreams" she started to sing.
Somewhere on the Ivory Island, a man was playing with a vial, throwing it in the air and catching it. One time, his fingers slipped.
-
I'd like to share some random thoughts; it's two years since I joined, a little retrospective on my part. Who knows, maybe some can connect to what I'm saying here. First off, I find that much of my first impression of MD is gone. You know what the say about the first impression. I personally felt ...mmm...an uneasy, eerie atmosphere. The story of Marind, the visual style (striking because it was different from what you usually see), the 'wtf am I supposed to do', it all created a thrill, a feeling that _something_ is broken. Now, it's more like 'what's happening new?', getting pissed off or laughing at stupid **** or cool stuff; so, it doesn't feel like a game, it's...something else. Another thing: people who return. I don't understand that. People who return are like people I see everyday in MD, but never talked to them. And it becomes weird when they suddenly say (some of them): 'I'm back and I'd like to do something cool, but there are people who prevent me from playing the way I want to.' You've heard that. What they mean, is that they have a history, with bad and good, the good is why they came back, the bad is why they don't dare do anything, 'cuz they know it will be rubbed in their face. Oh, you're back. Who cares? (i'm kidding, welcome back :) ) But some make alts to come back. To such an extent I don't believe in new players anymore. All I see are alts, alts, alts. The moment one asks a question/says something that shows he/she understood something about the game, I get suspicious. Who the f are you? I think. That is the question - not that 'to be or not to be' lame ****. Who are you, I'm going to spy on you and mistrust everything you say, 'cuz you are OBVIOUSLY an alt. A new player wouldn't know _that_random_thing_. Newbs are a myth. But new players do arrive and I'm like 'where did these people come from?' And they come to you and start talking to you and stuff as if they're EQUAL. My thought is b*****, I got more AD than you, go sod off'. Then I think I used to be like that and I well up thinking how great some people are to actually help newbs. I wouldn't have the patience; I'd go like 'go read and then come back to me'. So, that kind of attitude is felt. I felt it, I wasn't told that (much), so I am in some kind of love-hate relationship with the vets here. I like them, they're great to actually not say 'f*** off', but I'd like to strangle them, because the attitude is there. Then I think I'm becoming like that and I get scared. I never thought I'd get to this point :( to actually think I'm better than other (new) players. Maybe there's a genius in there and I brush them off and wait for them to come ask me things (not that I know that much, don't ask me stuff). But I can't help it. And new people always come up with new ideas, don't they? Creature ideas, concepts, mechanics...Of course, I think 'Chill, we don't care about your little ideas'. On another note, I like how people can be untrustworthy assholes around here. Of course, being one means people will shun you, you will be ignored, isolated and your only hope will be in newbs who don't know you yet. But you can be one in MD and you won't get a 'no entry here' sign. Even more, you will be someone people can look at, examine, decide whether they want to be like you and stuff. I liked when Mur stood up for my name change, saying people are entitled to an opinion. It wasn't my intention to offend anyone (not in that manner, anyway), but the fact that I wasn't censored was cool. I like there are some annoying people in MD. Like, pissing me off. That makes me more focused. The fact that some will shake their heads, even if not saying anything, makes me want to show them. Also, I didn't really think about MD disappearing up until recently. Like, ending for me (personal issues), or for everyone. Now, I just accept that as a fact. Yes, it might end just like that. There were times when I thought about quitting, so that would've naturally ended it for me. But, you know, it can just go away and there's nothing you can do about it. That's not necessarily a bad thing. The thought gave me some kind of freedom, as if I'm not bound to, compelled to do anything. Too much freedom is dangerous, though. What if I just quit suddenly because I feel freeeeeeee!!? Idk, but I don't care that much. For now, I feel my MD experience will end with a ban. Why a ban? Because I can't think of another way. Merry Xmas!

First of all, I'd like to say this is a great forum topic and one important for our land. Maybe not much seems to have happened in the last years, but enough happened to warrant the creation of another chapter. I am taking the opportunity to write it now. If I made mistakes, provided incorrect/incomplete information or I have missed anything, please PM me, as this topic should be clean. Ann. 2248 [2012-04-03 00:24:35 - Stage 11] Treasuries Feature: The Treasury feature has now been implemented. These were initially planned for Kingship to store items and creatures that are related to the land. The special features of a treasury is that creatures stored in a treasury will gain age like they are stored on any other player. Creatures also incur no penalty in taking them out or storing them in a treasury. These features are ideal for storing large amounts of creatures specifically for rewards. Lands will be able to barter with goods held in their treasuries. In addition rewards gained from the Torch Contest will be deposited here, and the manager of the Treasury will be able to spend Torch Contest rewards for creatures and items (this is important in the light of another ann regarding treasuries and MB, I thought of adding it here) Ann. 2407 [2012-10-13 18:14:20 - Stage 11] Chewett and Maebius have been granted access to Angiens Shrine for their constant work for the Seekers of Enlightenment and in the interest of Marind Bell. Ann. 2486 [2013-01-31 13:09:24 - Stage 11] Magic Duel has a new dreamweaver. Princ Rhaegar received the ability to use dreams. Being a public role, he will start with 2 Trust Points. Ann. 2600 [2013-05-28 17:41:43 - Stage 12] Marind Bell has a new monarch! Voting for the Marind Bell elections ended at 21:00 last night, 16 people voted, and the winner with a majority was...*drum roll*... Chewett! ...or should that be King Chewett now? Congratulations to Chewett on his new position, the land tools will be given to you shortly to help manage your land. Ann. 2658[2013-06-24 03:24:20 - Stage 12] Three water buckets from the Marinds Bell item dispatcher have been turned into Large buckets that require a high gardening skill to be taken from the dispatcher. One of the large buckets gives you a lot more dowsing skill per use and two of them gather more water (and give increased dowsing skill) Ann. 2665 [2013-06-30 23:39:53 - Stage 12] I selected actually 8 people for the mission, they are: For Marinds Bell : Aelis For Loreroot: The Warrior For Golemus Golemicarum: *Nimrodel* For Necrovion: *Peace* For Underground: dst For Tribunal: AmberRune For No Man's Land: Mercurial Spectre For MD Archives: *Shemhazaj* Their mission is to be Sky Scouters and to help mark all realm locations according to their opening towards the realm's sky. This will affect how the sun shines, how dark it can get and how much it will rain in each place. --Mur Ann. 2682 [2013-07-19 17:19:33 - Stage 12] A hot water generator and a bench have been added to Fortune's Well and Marinds Bell Gates, artworks provided by dragonrider7 as part of the scene contest. items are not functional yet, just visible. The scene contest is closed but its not over, i still have several other items to place and people to reward. A debt repaid - AL chapter This is a chapter involving Marind Bell and Necrovion as main protagonists, as well as various assassins - a dark page that started with the killing of members of the Tainted Warriors. Notable characters from Marind Bell are, in order of appearance: Maebius, Junior, Chewett, Princ Rhaegar (now known as Jubaris), nadrolski. Almost all have been killed in the events (even multiple times). This is (currently) the last chapter of the AL, it's easy to spot :p Ann. 2825 [2013-11-18 00:25:05 - Stage 12] Princ Rhaegar has been voted the King of Marind Bell. Congratulations. ('A debt repaid' saw Princ's rise to power) Ann. 2868 [2013-12-28 13:13:43 - Stage 12] Angiens shrine now can recruit angiens again. Ann. 3083 [2014-07-20 22:57:29 - Stage 12] Down with the Bunny Empire spell has been coded and given to Princ Rhaegar as part of his Personal Request Month wish. (this ann shouldn't be here, but I love that spell) Ann. 3286 [2015-01-10 16:12:58 - Stage 12] MB Elections As announced MB has held their elections and Nadrolski has been appointed their new king. Ann. 3520 [2015-05-25 21:45:19 - Stage 13] MB Story mode keys removed The two MB chapter 2 and 3 story mode keys have been removed from all players who have not bought the wish. This wish has also been expanded to give both chapter 2 and chapter 3 wishes. If you were given your access without getting the WP please contact me. (this marks a change that story mode removal brought with it - the scenes are now accessible only through WPshop and hence the number of the WPs needed to spend to get to the wish has been reduced slightly - from 6 to 5) Ann. 3522 [2015-05-26 00:23:17 - Stage 13] Story mode keys removed - Sages keep entrance and Necro gate entrance Both these locations were originally only passable using story mode keys and both now you can enter freely. So all those holding these keys have had them removed. (another change triggered by story mode removal) Ann. 3644 [2015-08-31 14:59:57 - Stage 13] Land Treasuries Land treasuries have been implemented so that lands can store a limited number of items and creatures. This is the first big project completed and represents a move towards lands having power and wealth. As promised, Jubaris was able to choose the first land to get this treasury and the land chosen was Marind Bell. This land has had their treasury installed in the location where the land influence used to be. Ann. 3691 [2015-10-31 00:58:11 - Stage 13] The Marind Bell treasury is officially open! They have been given two keys to test out the land treasury format. For now they have been given instruction to not abuse anything they can find, without reporting it. Treasuries allow a host of potential abuses so there will be more formal rules once the four main lands have decided how they should be using them. Once this has been done other lands will get the treasuries. Congratulations to Marind Bell for attaining the chance! Ann. 3717 [2015-11-22 17:05:00 - Stage 13] For the Torch Contest reward Jubba has chosen a custom (and newly) coded item that has the ability to turn the weather sunny. (this is in line with the 'bringing of light' idea and I think it will see an interesting use in the future)
