    Only if you know something is codable -- and know how -- only then do you have a sense of how much willpower is required for it to manifest...and, regardless of where that willpower originates (who votes) it needs to be somehow transferred/channelled...

    Similar concepts apply to the idea of choosing the right judge/s.  Empathy is a must; balanced empathy (avoiding bribes/vested interests) is just.  (haha must/just that rhymes)

    i'm not sure i agree with ungod about thought being an attribute of death [/imagination principle]...I think we give ourselves way too much credit, if we declare that our thoughts stand all things on the equal ground.  But the concept of the two realms (balance/imbalance), and of us existing in both of them, is a nice one.

    I recently mentioned this to a friend...if you've seen Westworld, you know a little about the metaphor of a marble maze game for consciousness.  The marble won't move unless we pick the maze up and start tilting it, temporarily breaking the concept of equality.  This applies to each of us too, and it leads to a justification of the otherwise-bizarre reality of the existence of nature/life.


    Goals of voting could be, in order of their perceived importance in my mind:

    (a) sustained legitimacy/peace -- that people will accept the outcome without simultaneously internalizing a "life is unfair / self-pity is justified / evil is acceptable" mindset

    (b) empowerment -- individuals should not feel that widespread debate and approval must occur in order for them to independently contribute to results (a) and (c) from their current place in society/the world.

    (c) practicality/truth -- achieving a favorable result/providing for peoples' real needs

     

    In the interest of peace, it seems like the voices of government / "voters" ought to be people who are well-liked and humble, who know how to hear out someone in an abnormal position/mindset and have them know they've been heard...one way to describe this role would be that of judge

    In the interest of empowerment, it makes sense at the governmental level to have a hierarchy of local- vs. larger- scale government, and at the lowest level an individual person ought to have power i.e. have a vote.  Though truthfully empowerment is better served through other media besides government (in particular by ensuring each person has a friend.)

    truth is difficult:

     1. in the case of a situation where multiple parties have a dispute, voting (e.g. judging) should not be allowed for an individual who would for whatever reason end up playing favorites rather than considering individuals' true needs -- this actually hurts even the "favored" side by undermining the vote's outcome's peace/legitimacy.

    2. Obviously this is where concepts of debate/free speech/allowing experts to share their positions, become crucial.  In this world nothing is simple, and it does not make sense to have an ignorant voting body.  However we do not always have access to the best information or to enough time to make a "proper" decision, because...well, because in this world nothing is simple.  In particular at the local/individual-vote level it does not make sense to expect people to do research that they may be mentally incapable of doing or of caring enough to do.  Screening based on knowledge would have more of a role with higher-level decisions like selecting a judge.

    At first I wasn't sure if the rumors were true.

    Then the first swelling appeared, like spots of dew

  6. @Chewett While I can't speak of blackshade rider specifically (especially as I have not read his blog post), I can tell you that one of the most distressing states (for me at least) is seeing a strong emotion in someone else (whether or not it's real) and not being able to connect to them at that point with a responsible action.  

    I would not be surprised if that would lead some to take risks/do explosive things.  For me I tend to just go hide in a corner.

     

    @Blackshade Rider looking through your forum activity and not seeing any follow-up to this, I'm going to resurrect.  the forum really is the perfect medium, like chew says...i too encourage you to open up, especially now that some time has passed.

  7. Hehe, nope, sorry.  Without getting into the details, I'm just not going to have access to internet at home, so I'll just be dropping by the library or Starbucks now and then to do stuff.

    (In general the temptation to use the internet late at night is just too strong...I've tried putting other restrictions in place and it just doesn't work when I'm alone with a computer.  Being decently tech-savvy doesn't help.)

    I'm doing something I should have done a long time ago and placing an important restriction on my internet use...In the medium term (probably at least 6 months) I will probably be online much less often than usual, and probably not every day.  

     

    It is up to MD whether this is enough for me to fill my role as tool guardian at passage of war...due to the nature of the items there I think my minimal presence will probably be enough to fill my role (the only thing that seems to offer a real incentive for sabotage are the Needles, so if you want to use those please send me a forum PM) but please prove me wrong.  If you want, I can give someone else the tool.

    Honestly it does get kinda boring in MD sometimes, ya gotta do SOMETHING...I've considered doing some testing with one of the other guardians but the mechanics are too straightforward (though it did take a few tests to understand them)...nowadays I keep track of pretty much every single person who takes something from the passage of war in my k doc (notebook still messed up probably) just because I can xD

    So don't make it out as some huge unacceptable vice to be bored (and as I've said, land loyalty could well be called "land ennui"...it makes you more uncomfortable in a scene, more likely to escape...ergo MD "rewards" boredom, or at least expects us to utilize it to break out of our shells). that said, it's not like boredom justifies abuse

    For clarity: my issue is not with depletion itself (while I do dislike it), it's with the apparent double standard which is in my opinion unacceptable for such positions. It could be argued for or against, but I would honestly like to see nad say something on the topic.

    To dark raptor: that seems like clear abuse (from the announcement, don't have multiple of one tool) and gets into the "who watches the watchers" question...

     

    I think technically I can grab ban Ungod or nad and they won't be able to take MB buckets (though the ones they have won't be returned) but that might be overstepping my role.

    I should know this, but...Who is the king of MB?  They would decide if the depletion in MB is an issue and if so when...maybe they could even be "unfair"  (Lintara has explicitly told me that water depletion in her land isn't an issue, though.)

  11. Rereading mallos's cited announcement (and see also the tool guardian tag description)

     

    I think depletion is quite clearly "sabotaging the use of the tools" for the straightforward reason:  if there are few/no resources, what is the point of grabbing the tool?  

     

    Besides which, if we know the Monarchs can specify tool use limitations, and they have specified depletion limits, how else could you categorize those limits except as limits on tool use?
