Memories

Some of you may know that 5 days a week (assuming that I am not sick and other things do not get in the way) I tell a story to the Oak seed. I am now reaching out to you, MD community, with the following question. If you would not want me to write about it, but would still like to share your memory, please say so in your post. The following is the question: "What is the most vivid, meaningful, or significant memory you have had in MD?" Thank you in advance! Awi
3. The website talks about creation. Creation to me is the taking of what exists and adding a part, be it tiny or large. I've found myself sometimes struggling for something entirely original, but I realize that it's impossible or in the very least improbable. No one works in a void, and it's impossible to influenced by things around us, whether we try and avoid it or accept it. Also, I'm not sure why the author of the website is spending so much time diagramming and attempting to put into words and equations "knowledge." Not that I think it's a total waste of time, but surely this time could be better spent creating said knowledge? Awi

Secrets

True enough, Z. (http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/General/Glass/glass.html) Seems my elementary knowledge of glass didn't quite meet the cut. Awi

Secrets

The screens, while I agree are static, are not... in my opinion... a single snapshot. Can you tell that a window is moving? Glass is actually a liquid. Similar to this, something set can actually be in motion. Of course some parts of MD don't following this too slow to see idea. I think that there is not a particular reason that nothing appears to move; there was no wizard who froze time, that is too... simplistic. Or you could go an entirely different direction, and talk about transposition: it is said that a place has a single identity, which is the summation of all its moments in time into one. Is it too hard to imagine that each scene in MD is not displaying the place in time, but the place withdrawn from time? That is, it's true identity? Of course the true identity doesn't change easily... but it can change. Awi

Secrets

I don't agree with the second part. In the first, you are referring to the Principle of time, of course, and the idea that time is simply the addition of many events linked together to form a motion. The idea that the scenes in MD are like someone's memory, and we are walking through it? I cannot accept that: what we do in MD changes the scenes over time, and things are not always the same. The world has a starting point: the moment the Angien opened up the box. Everything was there. I fail to see how what we see is simply a reflection of the past, or hiding secrets. Instead of looking back and trying to search out what is being suggested in what is suggesting, create the suggestion. This is a slightly difficult idea. Maybe an anology will help: There is a box, and written on the box is a symbol. One person goes up to the box, sees the symbol, and opens the box and starts looking for the replication or representation of that symbol within the box. The second person creates the object implied, and puts the created object into the box. The first will result in a waste of time, the second in the growth of the box. This is how I view MD. MD is a suggestion that we must take and create. You are right in thinking it points to secrets, but those secrets are held within ourselves to be created rather than within MD. Perhaps that is confusing. Awi
7. I agree whole-heartedly!! I cannot tell you how bad I feel when I cannot answer someone's question for 8 hours, due to the fact that I am sleeping away. This would be amazing if it could be fixed. Awi
8. Oak Tower? I believe Tarquinus's spell is multi-target. I could be wrong. Awi
9. Before making this cake, I recommend you check the windows to make sure there are no people meandering around. Unfortunately MD now has one less newbie. He got a cake to the face. Awi
10. There is a french film that has the following line: "Am I unhappy because I am not free, or am I not free because I am unhappy?" This idea of freedom and it's connection is fairly basic to human society. The reason that there are "good" limitations and "bad" limitations is only because the ones that are good are the ones that agree with your own personal sense of morality and the ones that are bad are the ones that conflict with said personal morality. In truth, however, what does absolute freedom cause? It is of course only hypothetical because never can such a thing exist. However, I might argue that in a vacuum of limitations, a person is happy, and truly happy, because they are free to discover what limits them internally, rather than constantly struggling with the bonds of external limitations. A tragedy of freedom is that we often limit ourselves or perceive there to be limitations when there are none. I am not saying that physical and true issues that prevent us from fulfilling our full potential do not exist, for of course we see them on the news everyday, but I've noticed a fair number of people who are so caught up with this idea of judgment and rules that they implement more strict rules than actually exist. They are trapped not by society and its laws, but by their interpretation of it, and that's horrifically sad. This is a great discussion to bring up. Does anybody have thoughts on freedom and limits? 12. Here's a crazy idea: There is such a thing as a Hausdorff dimension. Essentially it works like our world: 0 is a point, 1 is a line, 2 is a plane, etc. The Hilbert curve is a space-filling factal. To build a hilbert curve, you start first with a square missing one side. Then you combine three of these boxes together with a line in between each box. Then you combine three of these shapes together with three more segments. Continue doing this until the entire area is filled, going to infinity. Here's an example (courtesy of wiki): http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/46/Hilbert_curve.gif What is the Hausdorff dimension of this fractal? You might be tempted to say 1, because the fractal is only one line filling up a space, but in reality the Hausdorff dimension of this fractal is 2, a plane. Awi

14.
Take it as a given you cannot: this is not Lord of the Flies or Heart of Darkness. Civilization goes only so far as you are willing to carry it, you feculent barbarian. If you behave as a savage, expect to be treated as one.
And here I was thinking that Mr. Kurtz would fit in perfectly with MD: brutal, clever, and entirely crazy. My mistake. Awi
15. Whoah, 4 WP? That's intense and unfair, mainly because to get 4 WP is difficult. 2 is a more reasonable cost. Awi

17. I agree wholeheartedly with dst on this one. I'm frankly disappointed. If you want to choose yourself, do so. If you want a vote, do that. Combining both... just gives the illusion that you don't even care what people are thinking. It seems to me your mind was made up even before the vote. As you say, you "felt an affinity to it as soon as I read it." How discouraging. Furthermore, you lost my poem completely, and when I reminded you about it, you assured me that you would look for it. I never heard back after that, so I'm assuming you just threw it out without telling me. Responsiveness to those who are doing your quest is number 1. If people feel ignored, then they will ignore your quest. Learn from this, please. Awi
18. Many, many William Faulkner stories, as well as a biography. I recommend Barn Burning and a Rose for Emily, if you are interested. Other things: Winesburg, Ohio - Sherwood Anderson A Lost Lady - Willa Cather Awi
19. I mean, yes... there are a lot of unnecesary things... But on the other hand I think we should be careful. Nothing would really be lost on my side, because every big item I have is an iframe. But what about the people who aren't here, but are coming back? I don't know, it seems hasty. Awi
20. I can confirm this issue. Awi
21. This quest is over, and the three winners have been rewarded their wishpoints. However I would like the winners to explain the answer to this quest here. If they don't want to do that, then I will explain what they told me. Awi
22.
but that is what dst does and MD would get more boring if she didn't. oh and I tend to agree with the don't ignore the system but I understand why people do it
And for this, I suppose we should say, "Thank you dst." Awi
23. This is a very silly thing to be arguing about for this simple reason: MD is different for all people, and some systems are better for some than they are for others. One person could say with absolute conviction that the combat system is better than the RP (dst) and another who views them more equally (kafuuka, I believe). Which one is right? I would say that they are both right, just as every single person is right. Are those who say MD is an RPG right? Yes, although their wording implies something that I think they usually do not mean. MD is an RPG to those who play it like one, it is a FPS if you want to play it like that (though realistically, no one does), and it is a place to log in and look at the same picture every day if that is what you so desire. As Tarquinus has argued in the past, the true beauty of MD comes when you integrate ALL parts of MD into one, that is the challenge it puts forth. Whether you rise to that challenge or not, in the end there is no punishment or reward besides those given intrinsically, and those should be more than enough to motivate someone to fulfill the challenge. Grinders have a place in MD, as do RPers. So what if RPers call it an RPG... they only do so because RPing is the activity in which they participate; therefore it is no surprise that they view MD as an RPG. Perhaps I am a fool, and MD is only one thing, one-dimensional, with one way to be played. Consider this also, if you so choose. Awi

The Stone

Stuck on the second encryption, and I'm forced to give up. If I can get this second cipher, I know I can get the rest. It's just decoding the name of the poem that is getting me... Oh well, not worth the hours of effort it would take to find it. Sorry. Awi
