1. "Truth" is a word that is in many cases extremely misleading, but let the Seal of Six miss no chance to better the image of mystery and diabolical planning that they so masterfully present. I use the word image (rather than, say, reality) on purpose. But think twice before being fooled. There is one mastermind behind this, and his name is *edit*The out of character man behind*endEdit* Tarquinus (or Keith, or any of his other names). Make no mistake about that. Awi edit thanks to Phantom Orchid for pointing out the confusing nature of the post.
2. Also keep in mind that it is possible that the no's were in response to my guesses. I said Sen? and Send? after which she said the no's. Awi
3. It also seemed to be that Be might stand for betrayal, but none of this is sure. Awi

Stop Ggg

I am against GGG, and... I am about as weak as an old mp5 can be. GGG is boring. Where is the excitement? Awi
5.
Part of that bad is screwing over those perceived as good. Mya is perceived as 'good' and just got screwed over. Now, the 'good' can either fight back with some real force of their own or take it. Either way, welcome to the game!
MD is good and bad on a very surface level. Mostly MD is full of people who make decisions based on what they believe is right and wrong. The idea of teams of good and teams of bad is simplifying life to an extreme. And the last line? You have been here far less time than Sharazhad. I believe it is she who should be welcoming you. Awi
6. No murderer asks their victim before killing them... that would be very counter-intuitive. Mya isn't supposed to be happy about being killed. She's been thrown into a position, and it's up to her to play it how she likes. MD is a game, you're right, but it strives to be something better. This is a step in that direction. In addition using the "in other RP games they do this" is an awful argument. This isn't other games, this is our game. I can point to many times when people have had their course changed by others: Khalazdad with the shades, Darigan getting his brain cut out, dst's avatar changing, Knator Commander leaving his post, and the list goes on. We are meant to interact, and sometimes that interaction isn't like a tea party. The reason people dislike the "bad RP" is that it is based on imagination and astericks. This is a concrete activity with real repercussions. I'm sorry if she doesn't like that reality. Awi
7.
If we break out of our cubes, how come we're all still in MD? I think the ultimate premise is that we can never break out-- all we can do is try to expand our horizons, widen the walls a little, but those walls will never break down because we are not all-knowing. We will always and forever stuck in a cube. The question is, then, how do we deal with that?
I disagree quite strongly with this statement, especially the following - "We will always and forever stuck in a cube." Forever is a long time, and infinity a most beautiful concept, simply because EVERYTHING happens when given infinite time. There is a slight probability that everything will happen, and given enough time, that slight possibility will become a reality. I think we can break free of our cube, although often times we find ourselves in another cube. Is that to say that there is no way to eventually lack barriers and shed walls? No, certainly not. And besides, if someone did break free of the "prison" of cubicity, it is my impression that they would be too busy enjoying the freedom to come back and tell us how to perform such an act of escape. To me, the dead and the free rarely return to speak. Awi
8. Burns, humans obey the law of conservation of energy too. We don't just "reproduce" either: we require chemical and other energies to rebuild cells. So by your logic, a battery is just as organic as a human is. It is being fed energy and it's level of order increases as it gains energy. Just like humans, it decreases in order as it finally reaches its death. So then what is the difference between organic and inorganic? Well, there isn't one, they're just words. People attempt to make a distinction (organic things have carbon: but what about carbon dioxide? baking soda?), but in truth there is no set line. In this sense, the argument is flawed from the beginning due to relying on such imprecise terms. Awi

Polls
Yeah, I have to agree with Chewett. While the current system relies on Mur actually doing the work himself, I trust him to do so fairly. Especially when the last Land Leader votes had a section to name a second preference anyway. I do think that this data is usefull to anyone other than Mur trying to use public opinion to reach a decision, but it only really has an impact when there are more than 2 choices (the more choices, the higher the impact).
I agree that the current system works fine, but remember: Mur is always looking for ways in which things can be automated so that his load is lightened, and so that eventually he can play the game alongside us without worrying about small details. All the methods to poll I listed can be automated, and require no addition work besides having a machine tally the scores. Awi

Polls

I've noticed that a lot of MD's decisions are made based on polls, which is in my opinion a very good thing, however, sometimes majority polling does a poor job of ensuring that the maximum number of people are pleased: Let's give a hypothetical system. Say we have a common system of voting, were majority rules, and each person gets one vote towards a choice. We have four choices: A, B, C, D. We have three 8 people: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Here are the preferences for the choices, if each person ranked the choices: 1 - A, C, D, B 2 - D, C, B, A 3 - B, C, A, D 4 - A, C, D, B 5 - D, C, A, B 6 - D, C, A, B 7 - C, B, A, D 8 - C, A, B, D In this case, if each person cast their vote, choice D would win. But wait, that doesn't make much sense: if you pay attention, the majority people placed D low on their list, and while the three that won would be happy, the five that did not would be displeased. A better result would have been choice C, because everyone put that choice at 1 or 2, and so at least everybody would be moderately pleased. The problem with majority polls, especially when there are a larger number of choices, is that it is often the radicals that win, and not the choice that truly represents the best interests of all. Mur does try to even out his votes by using reasons and weighting it based on active days, but it is still a majority rules with a singular winner: we do not get any information about preferences besides the one. The best voting system, it seems to me, is one that takes into account that it might not be the number 1 choice, but rather the choice that is rated highest across the board. There are a few other voting systems that people could look into (I'm not saying any are perfect): 1. Approval - this is a very simple system, in which you approve or disprove of a candidate. For example, you are given a list of people and told to check all the people you would not mind leading. Then, the person with the most approves wins. 2. Cumulative - Each person is given a set number of points to allocate to the choices as they see fit. Example: you are given 10 votes to distribute to a number of choices however you please. The choice with the most points wins. This voting system offers for more strategy: you could place all your votes into one choice, but if that choice might loose, perhaps splitting up your votes would result in a positive result for your second choice. 3. Rank - Given a number of choices, rank them. Often there is a point system like a track meet: first place gets 3, second 2, third 1. The choice with most total points wins. There are other systems too. Keep in mind that majority voting is often deceptive in that it is truly unfair in many cases, despite our best efforts to represent the interests of everybody. You are welcome to discuss. Awi
11. This is what I understand: dst wants people to stop telling her not to voice her opinions. Fenrir wants mods to be careful of how they voice their opinions, because it affects people. Chewett wants everybody to treat mods like normal users. So it seems that the problem is not with the mods and their opinions, but that people are taking them with more weight than they deserve. I don't know about the rest of you, but I have never read a mod opinion that I shook my head in shame, albeit I rarely shake my head in shame at any posts. In addition, even as a young member of the community, I didn't treat mods with any sort of reverence. I knew all of the mods as players before I realized their were mods too, so perhaps they lost any sort of halo-effect they might have had. However, they were, and always have been, people, and people have opinions, some of which I agree with. Does it really matter what people think of mods, in terms of respect and admiration? The job of a mod doesn't require the people of the forum to listen to them. They can delete your posts whether you like it or not. In the same way it doesn't matter whether we like judges or not, mods are non-reliant on us. I don't like insults, though. Big words like bravery and courage should be left for epithets. Awi

Legends

15.
People are legends for different reasons. Some, like Khal are mentioned and remembered a lot it seems, others not so much. Personally, I feel that this is a job for the legend speakers or archivists in general. Often the most important things people do are the things that few people know about. It is this that makes people real heroes and tragically often forgotten or unknown by many. You could say that hero is a better word than legend. Some legends are more myth than reality. Has Jonn a legend? it seems not. But he meant a lot to me and his absence has been felt I think. He should not be forgotten, I feel that would be a crime somehow. Jonn was definately a person that I admired and respected and I feel he made a very real and definate contribution to life in MD. He should be remembered, a definate hero.
I agree, especially with that it is a job for the legend speakers or the archivists in general. But... where are they? When I stopped the book, I asked for the next archivist who wanted to pick up the project please contact me. Nobody has. Not one. The only person who asked was Kyphis, and all he asked was if I had written it. He didn't mention anything about wanting to continue the project. I would be more than willing to turn it over to the next archivist, but I'm not about to let an important project fall to the wayside because no one is willing to do it. If someone wants to stand up and take the job from me, speak now, please. Awi
16. Thank you Chewett. Perhaps time to open a poll (preferably in a newly created subforum?) Awi
17. This is partly why I stopped doing the memorials. I used to choose who was to go into the Book of Ancients, but in the time since I stopped doing them I have realized that it was not quite right for me to do that. It is true, I am (and probably will be, if this starts again) the author, but so much conflict could have been avoided had I allowed the community to choose their own legends. So, Chewett, and any others that follow his example, please do not tell ME why they deserve to go into the book. Convince the COMMUNITY. Keep in mind, the biggest change I want to make is that although I will write them, I will not choose who to go in and who not to go in. Awi
18. Just a reminder, the conditions for Legend were: 1. Long-lasting change. So, their name should come up in conversation often. Khalazdad, Wodin, and BigC are the legends, I believe. If you would like to challenge one of the placings of a person (move it either up or down) it can be put to vote. Awi
19. Hello! So it has been... over half a year since I closed the book to new memorials, and signed the project off for future archivists. Well, seeing Indy's quest, I was thinking that perhaps it is time to reopen the book again. So I ask the following question: Are there any veterans who deserve to be memorialized? The conditions for memorialization are: 1. Some form of inactivity. It does not have to be complete disappearance, but they should essentially have ended their legendary period. 2. The player must have brought about some form of change. Be that in fighting, role play, religion, or some other case. If you remember, as well, I had three categories (Legends, Greats, Notables). The only Notable is Jonn, so I am thinking of just adding Jonn to the Great list and removing the Notable list for good. That was the list that caused the most trouble anyways. In addition, I was thinking perhaps I will even open up a subforum on the archivists because if there is a round 2 for the book, I would really love to have a board for each person with a vote for which category they belong in (or if they belong at all!). And I also have to admit that my coding of the Book of Ancients is pretty shoddy. If someone could provide their services to make it significantly more snazzy, that would be much appreciated. I would be willing to pay. Also, if I see memorials that fit the above conditions in Indya's quest, I would be happy to add them to the book at the end of the competition, with the permission of the author and Indya. The following are some suggestions I have for those who might need to be memorialized: Zleiphneir (Tengri) Peace (I don't know, she is both dead and no longer Queen. She is around, true, but one might make the argument that her productive period is over) Marvolo (?) Princ (?) Thanks Awi
20. I still don't know who Tsenn is. Anyone? Awi
21. Can you maybe post Phantom Orchids even though it should not be considered? I would like to reread it. Awi
22. Last Tuesday I visited Abra again, and spoke of mostly inconsequential things.
: | Abra sits and wonders about the entrance Awiiya: Hello Abra. Awiiya: How are you today? | Abra: Today? Awiiya: *nods* This day. | Abra: It's like any other day. Awiiya: Are you sure? | Abra: Isn't it? | Abra: Well, you're here, so it's tuesday I guess. Awiiya: *nods* Today is tuesday. | Abra: Let me correct myself, it's like any other tuesday. Awiiya: Oh, by the way, in the next week, you will see a lot of people coming here and fighting each other. | Abra: Er..what? | Abra: Like that big gathering a bit ago? | Abra: I remember seeing many in the fort.. Awiiya: Similar, but for a different purpose. Awiiya: In that meeting people were only talking. In the next gathering people will be competing. Fighting with creatures | Abra: Is there any sense in that? Awiiya: There is, yes. The winner recieves a prize. | Abra: Will they attack me? | Abra: Or any other aramor? Awiiya: I don't know. It's possible, but I doubt it. | Abra: Why exactly in here though? Awiiya: Because it is a private place where the competition can take place without others interfering. Awiiya: Abra, is today a day for exploration, or are you going to stay on the Island for now? | Abra: I will stay I guess. | Abra: It's nice to be in a silent place....though it may get crowded soon. Awiiya: Okay. Abra, do you think you will hide for the competition, or you will you watch it? | Abra: I think I will watch it for a bit, and if it gets dangerous hide. : Awiiya nods Awiiya: I am not sure I will be able to come next Tuesday. Awiiya: Because I am not a member of the competition, if I enter the island I will be sent to jail. : Awiiya nods Awiiya: I am not sure I will be able to come next Tuesday. Awiiya: Because I am not a member of the competition, if I enter the island I will be sent to jail.
Awi
23. Thank you very much Sir Kamil. I look forward to the image. Awi
