  1. Commenting on the arguments occurring in this thread:

I don't see the need for so many complaints. There are simple solutions that you (referring to distrusting potential buyers) have complete control over.

    1) Don't bid on something offered by someone you don't trust. This is a simple way to avoid issues.

    2) Don't bid more than you are willing to pay for something. This way, even if the seller lies about anonymous bids to drive up the price, in the end you both end up with a mutually beneficial outcome.

There are alternative solutions of course: third party moderating the auction, blacklisting agreements, etc. And I'd love to see some of these implemented by groups of players.

In short, this is a complaint about complaining. Please excuse me. But I'd prefer to see players implementing new forms of auctions, introducing methods pf self-governance, committing acts of retribution, and creating new problems than listen to their preemptive complaints.

"I can’t help but dream about a kind of criticism that would not try to judge, but bring an oeuvre, a book, a sentence, an idea to life; it would light fires, watch the grass grow, listen to the wind, and catch the sea-foam in the breeze and scatter it. It would multiply, not judgments, but signs of existence; it would summon them, drag them from their sleep. Perhaps it would invent them sometimes – all the better. All the better. Criticism that hands down sentences sends me to sleep; I’d like a criticism of scintillating leaps of the imagination. It would not be a sovereign or dressed in red. It would bear the lightning of possible storms."

  2. @Blackshade Rider, I was reading over this topic, and wanted to note that it's hard to comment on a suggestion if, when I go back to reread it, it's been deleted.

@Aethon, I'm not entirely convinced the value of silver would change in relation to gold. Economics is not my strong point, but I think many macro-economic principles, such as the supply and demand curve, are less certain at small scales. Humans aren't entirely rational, and besides, the main use of silver as it stands stems from it being worth less than gold. If gold and silver became more equal in value, we would no longer be able to divide the value of gold by substituting silver. Anyway, it would be interesting to see how changing the supply of gold in MD would effect things, now that 1:15 exchange rate is so ingrained in people's minds.

  3. The acorn is shaped like a Klein bottle[1], defying our standard sense of shape and form, with engorged eyes embedded all along its body. It's upper orifice is full of teeth-like claws (or bear claw-like teeth?) in a pattern much like a lamprey[2]. The combination of these three features allows it to find its prey easily and then devour it repeatedly in a never-ending cycle.

It moves around (slowly but indefatigably) by flailing its long reptilian tail. It will get you, eventually, if you ever stop fleeing it. And alas, you cannot take the fight to it, because it is armored by endless layers of a strong shell like substance that will protect it from your blows. Your only hope is to run away and keep on running. Or you will be devoured.

Now, for every imagery you associated your fear with, you must choose an impossible expansion (or impossible contraction, if you will). For example, if you chose an oak, an impossible expansion would be the plant's monstruous growth of the root or of an acorn, forgetting the rest (or you could look at it as the shrinking of all of the plant's parts and systems while a root or a fruit remains at it's normal stage).

What you choose is up to your intuition (I think there should be a rule here, but I haven't been able to think of one). Grow a fish's head, shrink a bird, leaving it's beak, leave only the trunk out of a mosquito, your choice.

You can focus on one fear only or more/all.

    1. Reed - roots that extend into the core of the earth
    2. Koi - giant eyes that threaten to push out of the head
    3. Oroboros - this creature doesn't just have itself by the tail, it has eaten most of its body several times
    4. Geese - yet to hatch, the egg has several shells, like a matryoshka doll
    5. Bear - with long claws that act as stilts, this bear stands taller than the trees, eating is difficult
    6. Earth - a salty essence, no essence of clay or humus

I can't see how a sub-lease weakens your position, though? Once the time you agreed on expires, you get your item back, no matter what the other party does with the third party...

I can't see a problem with sub-lease, please do enlighten me.

One issue with a sublease is that the third-party may be the one that isn't trustworthy. It may slow down the process of getting the item back, especially if the original lessee doesn't have a similar contract with the sub-lessee.

Or perhaps you don't want to work with certain individuals. This helps prevent them from going through a friend to get their hands on your item.

    ---

On a separate topic, what's the preferred method for signing contracts? I'm thinking something like this process:

    1. Agree on a contract informally through PMs
    2. Once the text of the contract is agreed upon, the lessor posts the contract text in the proper forum
    3. The lessee confirms the contract with an affirmative reply to the topic.

But what if the lessee then edits their response? Also, this seems like a good way to clutter the forum with posts that are irrelevant to most other players. And what if the contract also involves secrecy, or is an non-disclosure agreement rather than a lease?

each land can have its own rules, BUT they have to be equal for all players, so if a MB player depletes and nad ignores it but then bans someone else for doing the exact same thing then i would consider it favouritism and thats sort of an abuse of power for the own or in that specific case for his land OR if our dear friend nad depletes himself with multiple buckets on him then he should grabban himself

I might even be okay with rules that favor citizens over non-citizens, but they should be well defined and posted publicly. Other lands could respond by banding together to deplete resources in lands that do this, passing harvesting restrictions of their own, or even placing trade embargoes against foreign citizens.

Methinks kings these days really need ought read more Machiavelli or something.

I didn't speak of mini-quests for noobs, I spoke of personal tasks that are your own selfish wishes.

I think the idea of personal tasks is at odds with a points system. If the tasks benefit the task-giver then there should be a transfer of value.

  8. I really like this idea, and I want to see it developed further, whether it receives official support or not.

I like Aeoshattr's idea of this being a function of the LHO or a similar group. That wouldn't prevent others from creating small quests for new players, but it does create some accountability for (and organization among) those who would be able to give out points. And this group could enlist the help of others (generating mini-quest ideas, or helping out enacting those mini-quests).

For reference, here's @Assira the Black's initiative is called the Masks of the Mist Booth, and there's some info on the topic linked below and in her personal papers at http://magicduel.com/players/Assira_the_Black

@Aethon also had a similar initiative:

Both are good resources for further ideas on how to implement @Ungod's idea.

  9. This is great!

One thing I might note, perhaps under accessibility, is that while registrations are necessary or helpful for some types of quests, they should be avoided for others, since often many people cannot commit to things in MD ahead of time (because of things like changing work schedules, childcare needs, etcetera).

As a personal side-note. Aethon sold me a Horseman  26/04/16 20:05. I knew he had a horseman from the auction but the sudden sale was, sudden.

Aethon, when I said I'd collaborate with you on plushies, you told me the money you got from selling them to would go towards the horseman auction, and that creature would be considered part of the MDA treasury, for quest sponsorship...

Maybe you plan to use the money earned for a similar purpose. If so that's fine.

I just think you may need to consider your actions and communications more carefully going forward.

  11. I had an idea, but first a question: will all first level resources have to be processed with a fillable into second level resources before they can be used in a cauldron/combiner?

If yes, ignore, but if no, then I have another question:

Could a large number of items be combined in a cauldron for something big for a land, rather than specifically a player? Could a huge amount of water be used to build a moat around Tempest Fort? Or could a windmill be built in Loreroot or Marind Bell from 20,000 lumber (or is lumber going to get processed into planks or something?). Etcetera.

If I had a surplus of resources I'd be as interested in doing something for my land with it as I would be of putting it to my own personal use.

I think this should actually give a random herb from a set. With some herbs rarer than others. the idea being that you identify the herb.

I think I will do this one, well use the unidentified herbs so kinda different.

I think we need a book of herbs to "identify" specific herbs.

Are you saying for a constant number X of unidentified herbs you'll get some Y herbs of a random type, where Y is decided by the rarity of that type? And that you if you have a Book of Herbs item, then you can select the type rather than have it selected at random for you?

    I like that idea.
